Relaxed Body/Relaxed Mind

Relax your body first, and the mind will follow. If you have not attained the ability to relax the body at will, you must first develop this ability before you will have much success with astral projection. There are many ways to relax the body, but a great technique to start with it the Toes To Head Relaxation meditation in the Meditation Skills course here at UMS (University of Metaphysical Science). When the body is relaxed, the mind will naturally follow the cue.

Breathing

Following your breathing is an excellent way to focus your mind, gather energy, and quiet the mind. Just breath naturally and follow your in and out breath, allowing yourself to “fall asleep” in the body while your mind stays awake. Then you will be in the state that is necessary for achieving and OBE(Out of Body Experience).

Visualization

When you tell story, the mind will follow and create images. For instance: pink elephant. Did you not just see a pink elephant in your mind? Images are the language of the mind. If you visualize yourself rising up out of your body, your mind will make it so. If you visualize yourself floating on the ceiling, your mind will make it so.

Loss of Physical Attention

Put less attention on physical body, and more alertness directed to inner reality. Concentrate on your inner landscape. Allow yourself to experience loss of hearing, touch, awareness of body position, and so on. Notice what is happening inside instead. Are you spinning, rocking, vibrating…?

Body Asleep/Mind Awake: This is LITERAL!

Trance states are similar to deep sleep. Your brainwaves fall into the theta and delta range, which are present and predominant while you are sleeping. However, your mind can still be awake and alert during this time. This is a fine line to walk. It is easy for the mind to slip into the asleep state, and it is easy for the body to come back to wakefulness if you cannot learn to balance yourself and straddle the two realities of awake and asleep at the same time. If you have trouble keeping the mind awake while your body is asleep, give the mind things to do that keep it busy while the rest of you relaxes. You can use the focus on breathing to keep the mind busy, mantras or affirmations, counting, or a visual focus point, like gazing at a point of light in your mind’s eye. Concentration is necessary.

Signs of reaching the body asleep/mind awake state are the following:

  1. Breathing slows down, as if sleeping
  2. Vivid imagery
  3. Alert waiting space
  4. Vibration, shaking, rocking or floating
  5. Stillness
  6. Awareness goes out 360 degrees in all directions
