If your business requires confidentiality, which is vital to a therapeutic relationship, do not discuss anything that happens in a session with anyone else. This is crucial to maintaining trust and safety. Confidentiality can sometimes become a challenge when you have a dual relationship with a client. Dual Relationships are defined as a relationship between client and therapist that goes beyond the therapeutic interaction into social or business endeavors. There are two ways to deal with this and neither is right or wrong. The first is to avoid it at all costs. Secondly, handle it by keeping clear boundaries and checking in to see if the other person can manage multiple roles. It may be awkward with family and friends, as they may test your limits and policies by asking questions that may impinge on your confidentiality policy.
