The following are excerpts from various channelings by other people. There is no better way to show you what channeling is then to show the results in writing. You will notice that all of these entries are compassionate and respectful, and were given in service to humanity. The guides are here to help humanity, and their messages are words of hope and assistance. Enjoy these entries and accept that which rings true for you, and disregard anything that does not. Not every message will resonate for you, thus the need for many different types of channels!

Edgar Cayce

Edgar Cayce, also known as the sleeping prophet, lived from 1877 to 1945. In 1901 Cayce had an unexpected awakening of his psychic powers during a hypnotic trance. During the trance, Cayce entered a sleep like state and was able to describe the illness he had and how to cure it. Cayce, his family and his friends were astounded. Soon word got out of Cayce's ability and many people came to him for psychic diagnoses.

In order to read someone and give them advice, Cayce would need their name, address, and where they would be during the reading. Often the recipients were hundreds of miles away. Then Cayce would enter a self-induced trance and slowly begin to speak in an authoritative voice. In 1923, a new form of reading emerged where Cayce would answer metaphysical questions, such as, "What is the meaning of life?" Cayce's answers to questions such as this often paralleled many of the views of the world's religions. One of the main themes of Cayce's readings was the theory of reincarnation.

Cayce described two sources from where he got his information. One was the subconscious mind of the subject, and the other was the universal memory, also known as the akashic records. During his life Cayce gave over 14,000 readings. His legacy lives on today in the many books written about him and through the people who are still inspired by his teachings. Cayce is often considered one of the most respected and important channelers of the modern era. The following are examples of Cayce's channeled material:

"All souls were created in the beginning and are finding their way back to whence they came."

"The coming into the earth has been and is for the evolution or evolving of the soul unto its awareness."

"The spirits of all that have passed from the physical realm remain about the realm until their developments carry them onward, or they are in the realm of communication, or remain with this sphere, and may be communicated with. There are thousands about us here at present."

"All you may know of heaven or hell is within your own self. Meditation allows you to obtain information on any subject and the answer will come from within."

Jane Roberts

Jane Roberts lived from 1929 to 1984. In 1963, Jane and her husband Robert Butts began to explore the realm of metaphysics and considered writing a book that would investigate ESP powers. Wanting to gain first hand knowledge for the book, Jane and Rob tried using the Ouija board. During their session, a being presented itself through the board with the name Seth. Both of them felt the experience was real, and soon Jane began to receive messages from Seth directly in her mind rather than through the slow process of the Ouija board. Jane decided to really open herself to Seth, and began speaking the words that appeared in her mind. Rob began to transcribe what Seth dictated, and soon, enough material was complied to put into book form. Over 25 books have been published as "The Seth Material." Jane conducted channeling sessions with Seth twice a week and eventually recorded over 1500 sessions.

Seth described himself as a personality no longer focused in the physical reality. Yet, he maintained the ability to contact this realm and give guidance from another realm. One of Seth's main teachings was that we create our own reality. The Seth Material (1970) has gained wide appeal and Jane is acclaimed as one of the most important channelers of our time. The following are examples of Seth's teachings through Jane:

"The responsibility for your life and your world is indeed yours... You form your own dreams and you form your own physical reality. The world is...the physical materialization of the inner selves which you have formed."

"You are not any of those past selves, even though they are a part of the history of your being. They are themselves in their own space and time. You are as different from those reincarnational selves, therefore, as you are from your parents, though you share certain backgrounds and characteristics. So you can theoretically expand your consciousness to include the knowledge of your past lives, though those lives were yours and not yours. The next step is taken when identity is able to include within itself the intimate knowledge of all incarnations. Yet in this state, the independence of the various reincarnated selves is not diminished as each separate identity then seeks to know and experience its other portions, then All That Is learns Who and What It Is. Action never ceases its exploration of itself."

"If you could but perceive the miraculous nature of your own reality in this particular moment that you call the present, how dazzled you would be, and how little you would think in terms of purposes. Your reality is purpose and knows itself. What a rich, undefined miracle exists in each of your beings now! You look at painting, or a poem, and call them great. If you could feel the miraculous structure of your own being now, and appreciate it, how you would wonder! be a medium.

JZ Knight

JZ Night was born in 1946 and continues her channeling work today. In 1977, JZ was experimenting with the power of pyramids in her kitchen when a seven foot tall luminous being appeared before her. She was awe struck, and the being said, "Beloved woman, I am Ramtha the Enlightened One, and I have come to help you over the ditch." For the next year Ramtha gave JZ many teachings about life's mysteries. Then in 1978 JZ was shown how to let Ramtha inside her body, so that she could be a channel for Ramtha to teach others. Many people became interested in Ramtha and soon JZ was holding sessions and seminars nationwide. Ramtha describes himself as an ascended master, who lived on earth about 35,000 years ago. He was a leader of most of the people of the world at that time. At the end of his life he ascended but promised he would come back at a later time when people were ready for his teachings. Now through the channel of JZ he has been able to spread his teachings once again. JZ is a well-known channeler who has been scientifically studied numerous times and shown to possess paranormal activity, which scientists, as yet, have not been able to understand. Here are some examples of Ramtha teachings through JZ:

"An enlightened entity is one who does not see themselves as their body but as that aspect that is unified with all life. That is an enlightened entity. One who is not is one who views itself as separate, special, different from all other lifeforms. They are the entities that are ignorant."

"When you refuse to venture in thought beyond the bounds of social consciousness, portions of your brain are literally closed to the higher frequencies of thought. You know, it is very simple to be a genius. All you have to do is think for yourself."

"Any solid object is made solid by the creator of that object, and the creator of that object agrees that it is solid, so it stays solid. But the truth is when you go to sleep tonight, your bedroom will disappear or it will fuzz out and the light in your refrigerator will fade, because the moment that you go to sleep you are no longer observing your room, and the moment you no longer observe your room, it fuzzes out."

Barbara Marciniak

Barbara Marciniak is an internationally recognized trance channel who lives in North Carolina, and has been channeling since 1988. During a trip to Egypt and Greece in 1988 Barbara visited several pyramids and temples, which helped her open her psychic sense. Later that same year, Barbara felt the presence of several beings that were speaking to her from within. These beings described themselves as multidimensional extraterrestrials from the star system, the Pleiades. Barbara's mission has been to channel these beings teachings for the benefit of humanity. The Pleiadians, through Barbara, have said that they are here to help us with the spiritual transformation that is taking place until 2012.

Barbara has channeled volumes of material from the Pleiadians. Currently, four books have been compiled from this material. The Pleiadian's teachings have been compared to native shamanism, and Barbara says they are designed to help humans awaken to different levels of consciousness and to show how to move harmoniously between them. Here are some examples of the Pleiadian's teachings through Barbara:

"We are here. We are the Pleiadians, a collective of energy from the Pleiades. We have a long history. Our ancestors came from another universe that had achieved completion, a universe. You are simply working on a planet coming to completion, and we are here to help you with that task. This completion, or transformation, has been heralded by many for eons. It is an important time. What happens on Earth now will affect the entire universe."

"Awaken, dear friends, within this dream and realize that it is your duty and responsibility as human beings to imagine and visualize a safe world. It will be as you decree, and your own experience will thus reflect it."

"You are living in a time when opportunities for self-empowerment, expanded awareness, and spiritual growth appear to be unlimited."

Lee Caroll

Lee Carrol ran a technical audio business in San Diego for 30 years. He was not a religious or spiritual man. However, Lee could not help but notice that he was having authentic spiritual experiences. Lee was being contacted by a being who called itself Kryon. For years Lee ignored this being and tried to shut it out of his experience. However, it just kept coming back. Lee eventually decided to open himself to this being and see what it had to offer. Lee finally sat down and began to transcribe the messages Kryon was sending to him. Lee has channeled volumes of material from Kryon, and ten books have been made from this material.

Kryon describes itself as a non-human, loving entity who is here to assist in the earth's magnetic field as well as uplifting the consciousness of the world. People all throughout the world have been touched by the teachings of Kryon. Lee has even channeled Kryon several times at the United Nations building in New York. Kryon continues to send messages to the earth and there are many other humans that are able to channel this information. Here is a sample of Kryon teachings as received by Lee:

"I am Kryon of magnetic service. I have created the magnetic grid system of your planet. The creation of your grid system took eons of Earth time. It was balanced and rebalanced to match the physical vibrations of your evolving planet. During the time I was initially here, what you now perceive as positive and negative Earth polarity was altered many times. Your science can prove this; look for soil strata that will show multiple "flips" of north and south polarity of the Earth during its development. (The Earth did not flip; only the polarity). All of this took place before you were allowed to exist. Your writer assisted me and was of magnetic service at that time. His connection to me is part of the reason I am speaking through him now."

"The love God-Source is the power you receive when you call upon God for anything. Any entity calling specifically, verbally or otherwise for the power of God receives this love God-Source. It is literal, and will respond appropriately. Appropriately means that it will respond within the universal correctness of the call. Enlightened, balanced individuals are especially good at calling up and focusing the love God-Source. They have always been as clear pathways through an otherwise murky and resistant veil. Most of these individuals have been religious leaders through the ages, who used love as their basis for life. Their honest love for the universe, and others around them, and their tolerance for other's process and karma, was the key to their balance. Actual knowledge of the "way things work" was (and still is) unimportant."

"We are all linked together. We are the great "I AM" as your scriptures call God. When I send the message "I AM Kryon," there is a communication that I belong to the whole, and my signature is Kryon. We are God. You are a piece of God, and you have the power to become as high on your side of the veil as you were before you came... and you are loved without measure. You are each high entities of your own who have agreed to be exactly where you are before you ever got where you are. We are all collective in spirit, even while you are on Earth, veiled from truth. Although we are collective, LOVE is singular and is of one origin, or focus. This may seem confusing, but consider it a fact that is of primary importance, so that you understand that it is special for your current time."

Neale Donald Walsch

Neale Donald Walsch is the famous author of the Conversations With God series. Neale was raised Catholic but eventually became disillusioned with theology and gave his life to working for a radio station. Eventually things all went downhill and Neale was in a deep state of despair. One night, out of frustration and anguish, Neale scribbled a note to God, asking, "What does it take to make life work?" To Neale's amazement a soft and loving voice responded back to him. Quickly he wrote down what he was receiving. That same night, Neale asked many questions on paper and received answers to all of them. On several other occasions Neale would wake up in the night and begin to write down questions to which he would receive instant answers. These questions and answers were later formulated into the Conversations With God series.

Neale considers himself a modern day spiritual messenger. The messages he channeled, he believes, are direct transmissions from God. Neale has started the Conversations With God Foundation to spread these teachings all over the globe. Here are some examples of the answers to Neale's questions given by God:

"So go ahead now. Ask Me anything. Anything. I will contrive to bring you the answer. The whole universe will I use to do this. So be on the lookout. This book is far from My only tool. You may ask a question, then put this book down. But watch. Listen. The words to the next song you hear. The information in the next article you read. The story line of the next movie you watch. The chance utterance of the next person you meet. Or the whisper of the next river, the next ocean, the next breeze that caresses your ear, all these devices are Mine; all these avenues are open to Me. I will speak to you if you will listen. I will come to you if you will invite Me. I will show you then that I have always been there. All ways."

"The world is in the condition it is in because of you, and the choices you have made, or failed to make. (Not to decide is to decide.) Your own life is the way it is because of you, and the choices you have made, or failed to make."

"I will not leave you, I cannot leave you, for you are My creation and My product, My daughter and My son, My purpose and My... Self. Call on Me, therefore, wherever and whenever you are separate from the peace that I am. I will be there. With Truth. And Light. And Love."

Pat Rodegast

Pat Rodegast is a channeler of a spirit being named Emmanuel. Around 1975 Pat was practicing with meditation and began to go very deeply with her practice. Soon afterwards Pat noticed that she was receiving information from within herself that did not seem as if it was her own. A voice began to speak to her and told her that she had been chosen as the channel through which Emmanuel would share his message with the world. Pat has channeled three books from Emmanuel's teachings that have become sources of inspiration for people all over the earth. She also travels the world sharing Emmanuel's message with any who are willing to hear.

Emmanuel describes himself as a loving spirit being who is here to remind us of our inherent divine nature, and that truly we are loving beings. All we have to do is align with this truth that we have buried under an illusional sense of self. One of Emmanuel's main focuses is to help humans see life from the soul perspective. You are all here on a holy mission, a mission of self-remembering. The truth of your Being is the gift you bring and the purpose of your presence as well. Leave the rest to the Angels who walk with you. You, in your living courage, must bring only what Love has called you to bring: your conscious presence, your compassionate loving."

"Look to the Light when you find yourself in darkness. Look to your 'remembering' when the shadows of forgetting fall upon you. There IS another reality far more benign and of far greater capacity to create kindness and mercy than your minds can as yet allow. Be patient. Be at Peace. We are with you."

Sanaya Roman

Sanaya Roman has been channeling a spirit entity named Orin for the past twenty years. Sanaya studied metaphysics for years when she began to sense the presence of a being that told her it was her spirit guide. Orin has given her many teachings over the years, and Sanaya has compiled these into books. Sanaya says that when she channels she is fully conscious of her own self as well as that of Orin. The transmission of knowledge happens by Orin telepathically impressing Sanaya's soul with messages, which are then received in Sanaya's conscious awareness.

Orin describes himself as a non-physical entity living on the soul plane. He also says that he has lived an earth life, so he has the ability to shed insight into many of the human challenges we are experiencing. Orin told Sanaya that he had come at this particular time because humanity is going through a major transition and awakening. "You are entering a dramatic and exciting time. There is a wave of energy passing through your galaxy that is altering the course of all life it touches. This wave affects the very nature of energy and matter, bringing all matter into a higher vibration. Although it is just beginning to come to the earth plane, you may already be feeling the effects of this higher vibration of light. You may be receiving more insights, having more frequent psychic and telepathic experiences, and feeling a deeper need to know your life purpose and put it into action."

"You are rapidly evolving into a new race of beings. Because of the new, massive influx of light, a body of light is evolving in the human aura. The new wave of light is challenging you to open your heart and bring both your 'energy' heart and physical heart into a higher vibration. Your light body allows you to become a radiating source of light. Duane Packer

Duane Packer is a channeler of his spirit guide named DaBen. Duane got his formal training in geology-geophysics, and later studied bodywork extensively. During bodywork sessions, Duane began to notice that his body would be led to do healings that he had never studied before. The presence of another being seemed to be helping him heal people. Skepticism led Duane to not believe in what was happening, yet over time he could not deny that "someone" was helping him. Duane eventually decided to open himself to this being, and DaBen revealed himself as Duane's spirit guide. Here are some examples of DaBen's teachings as channeled by Duane:

"Call your soul to you right now. All you need to do is think of it, and invite it to join you. Some people imagine their soul as an enormous light, surrounding and penetrating their physical body like a sphere of light all around them. As you blend with your soul, let it sound a note of joy that reverberates throughout every cell of your body. Permit this new vibration of joy to stimulate and activate your DNA, the cellular code of your body. Allow it to open you to a new level of joy, your soul's joy."

Jach Pursel

Jach Pursel channels a well known entity named Lazaris. He has channeled many books and conducts workshops and seminars all over the United States. He has channeled Lazaris since 1974. It all began when he slipped into a deep meditation while sitting on his bed, his wife watching, and words began to come from his lips. Lazaris delivers a very loving message, and helps people understand how they create their lives.

"Your truer self doesn't deserve more miracles than others do; it is not rewarded with more miracles. That is to say, they look to utilize their strength and power ... their magic ... to make a life more than they look to these to make a living. In life, they look to supersede and surpass what has been, in search for what will be. They pursue the unfathomable with expectation and anticipation. They pursue the Unknown with hope."

Esther Hicks

Esther Hicks channels the wisdom of a group of non-physical beings that collectively call themselves Abraham. For years Esther was being contacted by these beings, and in 1986 she and her husband Jerry Hicks decided to bring Abraham's collective knowledge to the public. Through books and seminars, where Esther channels teachings directly for an audience, Abraham's teachings have spread worldwide.

Esther says when she channels she is either communicating with Abraham directly and then recording the information, or she opens her body as a vessel for Abraham to use and speak through. Abraham says their mission is to guide people toward a connection with the inner self, and to help people find true fulfillment through this connection. The following are examples of Abraham's teachings as channeled by Esther:

"The basis of your life is Freedom; the purpose of your life is Joy. You are free to choose to discover new avenues for your joy. "You cannot die; you are Everlasting life. In grace, you may choose to relax and allow your gentle transition back into your Non-physical state of pure, positive Energy. Your natural state is that of Foreverness. Have fun with all of this. Lighten up! You can't get it wrong."

The key thing is that as you self-actualize through the chakras and the subtle anatomies, you recall everything. This aligns your superconsciousness, and the only thing left is God. This manifest as an overpowering sense of completion, a profound altruism, and a strong desire to live life simply. It is called "the ecstasies," a divine form of madness, depending on how well you handle it."

"Joy is the alchemical emotion. Spirit has said one drop of joy transforms oceans of anger, fear and jealousy. Joy is the ability to feel the essence of your own divinity. When you are in your joy, that is who you truly are. You are experiencing the divine. That is enlightenment. Joy transforms the lower expressions of anger, fear and jealousy into their higher expressions of concern, courage and obsession."

Benjamin Crème

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1922, Benjamin Crème began studying art at an early age, developing into an accomplished painter in the modernist style. Throughout his early years Crème also studied various aspects of esoteric philosophy, in particular the teachings released in the late 1800s through Helena Blavatsky and the Theosophical Society, and more recently through Alice A. Bailey. Benjamin Crème has become the principal source of information about the emergence of Maitreya, the World Teacher. Throughout his life Benjamin was a student of occult and spiritual literature, especially literature about the Masters of Wisdom, a group of perfected individuals who are the custodians of the Divine Plan for this planet. In 1959 Benjamin was contacted by one of these masters who told him that the world teacher would be emerging in physical form on the earth soon, and that Benjamin had a role to play in preparing the public to know about this:

"Everyone is being affected by the new energy pouring into the world. Those who believed in political, religious and philosophical systems have become disillusioned because they have failed to bring peace, prosperity and happiness. You can only solve the problems of the world with a sense of realism that is not clouded by ideology or market forces."

"Life in the universe is absolute; in creation it is always relative. That is why people should not cry at death; it is not something horrible or ghastly. Their friends and loved ones have simply returned to their homeland. The books and writings received by writers through channeled sources are a sign that this message about life on the other side of death is beginning to get through to humanity. The human race is now being inspired to experience a feeling of awareness. People will not be able to explain it. They just know that they feel different about life."

"Little by little, a new consciousness is awakening humanity to its inner needs. The old, competitive spirit dies hard, but nevertheless a new spirit of co-operation is likewise to be seen. This augurs well for the future for it is by co-operation alone that mankind will survive; by co-operation alone that the new civilization will be built; by co-operation only that men can know and demonstrate the inner truth of their divinity."

Patricia Cota-Robles

Patricia Cota-Robles lectures all around the United States and has produced videos and tapes of her teachings. Her main message is that a new era of peace is coming and that we must align ourselves with it if we want to be swept up in it. Things may get messy for awhile, but it is all part of the Divine Plan. Here is an excerpt below of her channeling:

"You are a Beloved Child of God who is on Earth during this unique moment to co-create the wonders of Heaven on Earth. You are an empowered Instrument of God. This inner knowing is opening your heart and allowing your God Self to increase the amount of Divine Light flowing through your Earthly body."

"The increased influx of Light flows into the physical plane and enters the core of purity in every electron of precious life energy. The Light then pushes to the surface anything that conflicts with Its frequencies of harmony, love and balance. Unfortunately, as the discordant frequencies of energy surface to be transmuted back into Light, they often create the illusion that things are getting worse. People easily witness the surfacing negativity, but what they don't see is the incredible Light that is pushing the negativity to the surface to be healed and transmuted. That phenomenon has the effect of keeping people focused on the problem instead of the solution."

"When the focus of your attention is stuck on the negativity that is coming up to be healed instead of the Light of God that is pulsating with all of the patterns of perfection and solutions contained in the Causal Body of God, you empower and sustain the negative things that are surfacing. Instead of eliminating the problems, you actually intensify them. This creates the situations that make you feel desperate, overwhelmed and hopeless."

"People are so used to accepting the physical plane as their true reality, that they have forgotten it is merely a reflection of their consciousness. No matter how real your life challenges seem or how entrapped you are in the grip of poverty, disease, low self-esteem, loveless relationships, hatred, corruption, ignorance, war, etc., those distorted expressions of life can only be maintained in your life if you sustain them through your thoughts, words, actions, feelings and beliefs. Barbara Brennan

Barbara Brennan has written two very popular books in metaphysical schools of thought. She is one of the first people to write a text book level study guide on the chakras, the auras and healing techniques for those systems, thus affecting the physical conditions. Her books are called Hands Of Light (1988) and Light Emerging (1993). The guide she channels is called Heyoan. Brennan once worked for NASA and is a well educated scientist. Her contributions to the field of metaphysics will forever become mainstays in the metaphysical field. Below is a excerpt from her guide Heyoan.

"Let fear be your ally. Fear has a great deal to teach you. Fear is the experience of being disconnected from who you truly are; it is the opposite of love. Fear can be an ally if you allow it to be, and just say, I'm afraid. In continually doing this, you begin to see that you are not fear itself, but that fear rather is a feeling... These feelings are based on a great many assumptions of what might happen. Most fear is not of what is happening now but of what might be. If you are able to stay in the moment, fear will not find you. Fear is the projection of something that has happened in the past, into the future, through a large magnifying glass. So when you are in fear, you are not in reality."

"If you fear poverty, then your actions arising out of that fear, trying to stop personal poverty, will help create poverty on a world scale. Your fear helps maintain the mass belief in poverty. This mass belief in poverty causes a backlash reaction in which everyone strives to get more and keep it for themselves. This greed leads to the struggle for economic gain that has, in turn, brought about the impoverishment of the world's resources. This creates more poverty and holds it in place in the physical world."

"The things you most abhor and fear are the very things that you create... Greed is based on the fear of not having enough. What appears to be greed is really a result of fear of poverty. That, in turn, creates poverty... Make a list of your 'wants.' You will find that many of them are designed to make you feel safe, which they can never do. Now ask yourself, "Which of these wants do I wish to create from my higher consciousness based on my positive belief system?"

Christine Breese D.D., Ph.D.

Christine Breese is the founder of the University of Metaphyical Sciences and has spent many years channeling book material and doing private sessions. Although she does not do private sessions anymore, the group energy named Anwan has given vast amounts of information that can be utilized by anyone on the spiritual path. Below is an excerpt from the chapter called "Inferiority And Self Hate: Why?" in the book Reclaiming The Shadow Self (1997):

"You might be wondering why you have experienced self hate... You turned your anger inward because you did not know what else to do with it, especially if you were not allowed to have negative feelings when you were a child. You had no outlet and you had no guidance about how to handle anger when it came up. Usually, you were punished for having anger... If you tried to convey to an adult that you were upset with him or her, often you were the one who was made "wrong." So you turned your anger inward and became your own worst enemy. (If you have ever thought about harming or murdering yourself, you qualify as your worst enemy!)"

"Learn how to be your own best friend. Perhaps you are sympathetic to others and listen with love when they pour their heart out or seek your advice. Do you do this for yourself? If you allow others to keep mistreating you, you are not being your own friend. You are not taking care of yourself if you are taking other people's side against yourself. You must learn how to be on your own side."

"Release anger at yourself for becoming your own worst enemy. You did not know what else to do. You did not have good guidance from the influencing adults around you. How were you supposed to know? You were a child. A child looks to others to find out what it is, who it is, and how it fits into the world. If others were sending you the message that you were not valuable or lovable, then you had the natural human reaction. You took up the same behavior toward yourself that they showed toward you. Now you must go back and re-parent yourself."

Conclusion

Channeling can be a most rewarding experience. Channeling brings much wisdom into your life and speeds up your spiritual growth. It is a wonderful part of the spiritual path. It is also a good sign that you are advancing on your spiritual path to a heightened awareness when you are able to channel. Don't be discouraged if you aren't feeling comfortable with channeling right away. It is something that takes time to ease into. Right now you are being exposed to the concept of channeling, but it may be a seed that grows over time. Just be at ease with where you are right now and enjoy what you can, for you will definitely feel your guides even if you are not able to channel them right away.

You will help many people with your ability to channel. You can help them heal their broken hearts, you can help them heal their pasts, and you can help them with their deepest wounds, even those from past lives. You will be doing a great service for those who are seeking answers to their spiritual questions.

They will help you achieve other skills, increase your ability to meditate deeply, and heal your own past. Edgar Cayce was popularly known as "The Sleeping Prophet," thanks to his biography of that name by Jess Stern written in 1967. Cayce clairvoyantly channeled readings over a forty-year period of his life during the first part of the 20th Century, and his life and ground-breaking work have been covered by many authors. Most of his readings have been preserved in written form, and these total 14,246 in number, residing in the library of the Association for Research and Enlightenment in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Edgar Cayce's readings deal with a variety of subjects ranging from discourses on meditation and dreams, Bible interpretation, world affairs and prophesies of the future. This includes the history of man and our spiritual evolution, to personal health and spirituality for many individuals. He never received payment beyond what was needed for his modest family needs, and to eventually start his "holistic healing hospital" in Virginia Beach. Cayce was deeply committed to serving those coming to him seeking help, and he refused to use his talents for other than helpful purposes.

Born near Hopkinsville, Kentucky,in 1877, Cayce came from a modest farm family, being the only boy in a family of five children. He never had more than an 8th Grade education, and went to work early in life to help the family. Edgar became engaged at the age of 19 to Gertrude Evans, whom he eventually married and who later became a great support to Cayce in his work.

Cayce was a deeply religious man, and served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. As a boy, he was dedicated to reading the Bible, and had some visionary experiences, including conversations with deceased relatives. At the age of 12, he was asked by an angel what he wanted most in life, and he said that he wanted more than anything else to help others, especially sick children. Following this, an unusual ability developed in which he was able to sleep with his schoolbooks under the pillow and assimilate word for word what was in them. This gift helped him in school, but gradually faded.

The way in which Cayce's gift developed as an adult is interesting. When he was 23, he was earning good money as a salesman to start his married life with his fiancée of four years, and feeling confident. However, a mysterious case of laryngitis that persisted for almost a year, despite much medical intervention, forced him to quit his job. Cayce ended up in the fortunate position of a photographic assistant after many months of being able to barely speak above a whisper, but later he came to have his own studio through this turn of events.

The episode with laryngitis actually pointed him in the direction of his life's work, for it was through hypnotic suggestion, recommended as a final resort, that a reading for himself unexpectedly occurred, ultimately curing the vocal paralysis. The hypnotist was a student of osteopathy named Al Layne, and the surprise that he felt at the recommendations coming through loud and clear from Cayce's vocal chords while he was in a self-induced trance was significant. Cayce's speech was totally restored through what he himself suggested, and as a result Layne was motivated to seek help for a stomach condition that physicians had been unable to cure. Cayce was reluctant, only wishing to get on with his new trade in photography and settle down with a family. He nevertheless agreed to return the favor.

Cayce once again put himself to sleep and in a normal voice prescribed a regimen of herbal treatments, diet and exercise for Layne's improvement, which was quite successful after only one week, and caused great excitement. This eventually led to Layne's insistence that Cayce had a great gift and a moral obligation to explore its potential. After much soul-searching and prayer with his family, with whom he had remained close, Cayce agreed to submit to more experimental trances under the conditions that this work only be helpful to people, and that his time would allow him to develop as a photographer, principally. The year was 1901.

What followed shortly thereafter was a truly remarkable healing, through several readings, which also included osteopathic manipulations carried out by Layne, on a five-year old girl. Cayce had come to fulfill the desire he expressed to the angel so long ago...helping sick children. It was hard for him to commit to an unorthodox life of being responsible for information that was out of his conscious knowledge base. Yet it became harder for him to leave it behind after it was discovered that he could give distance readings.

Even though he loved photography and eventually opened the Cayce Art Studio in Hopkinsville, Cayce worked for a time with a medical doctor named Wesley Ketchum, who helped him become famous by submitting research papers on him and using Cayce's psychic talent in difficult cases. He became known as a "psychic diagnostician," and in the first decade of the 1900's had occasion to help heal his wife as she lay dying of tuberculosis, a very serious condition for those times. His fame spread and a Harvard researcher came to investigate him, finding him legitimate.

After moving to Selma, Alabama in an attempt to live a normal life as a photographer, Cayce once again picked up notoriety when he cured his son Hugh Lynn of potential blindness. (Hugh Lynn had been playing with flash powder, which burned his eyes quite badly). After that success, the requests for readings poured in, and he gave them with the help of his wife. However, since people found that doctors were unwilling to carry out the unorthodox treatments, Cayce had a dream of establishing a special hospital which could have fully qualified professionals to administer the treatments, which included herbs, spinal manipulations, electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, special diet, and colon cleansing.

Although he never refused to give a reading for a person unable to pay, Cayce began to take donations for his readings and started looking for backers to fulfill his hospital dream. He gave up photography, and by 1928 had moved his family and new secretary to Virginia Beach, Virginia, where the readings recommended that the facility be opened. (Gladys Davis Turner was to remain with the family until Cayce died, recording the readings with a stenograph and then typing them).

Thanks to wealthy backers, Cayce was able to open his healing hospital and also The Atlantic University, both of which had to close in the midst of the Depression in 1931. But the Association for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., known as the A.R.E., was founded at that time to disseminate and investigate the information in the readings, and still exists to today in Virginia Beach.

In the meantime, Cayce continued to give more and more readings and was investigated by many who helped spread his fame, some coming with skepticism and walking away marveling. His death in 1945, followed closely by the death of Gertrude, resulted from pneumonia contracted from stress and overwork as he struggled to keep up with the ever-growing tide of requests for help. Gladys Davis stayed with the A.R.E. as principal cataloguer of the volumes of information, and the study and dissemination of Cayce's work was carried on by his son Hugh Lynn until his death in 1982.

As for the massive body of information itself: not only did the readings give valuable assessments of the workings of the body and its systems and how to balance the conditions manifesting as illness, but what came to be known as "Life Readings" were also given for people. These contained references to past lives and karma, which was extremely controversial for that day in a Christian-dominated culture. As well, historical views that merited further investigations by researchers on the history of man and the existence of the legendary continents of Atlantis and Lemuria astounded many. As Jeffrey Furst notes in Edgar Cayce's Story Of Jesus (1968) the material dealing with these things "were decidedly alien to the awakened Cayce's manner of thinking. Nevertheless, the Life Readings were pursued from 1923 onward and comprise a major portion of the material in the Cayce files."

In terms of spiritual growth, Cayce's channeled messages always pointed towards the importance of the individual turning to within for Divine Guidance, and being of service to their fellow beings. He outlined procedures for meditation and self-inquiry in his readings that were put into a collection called Search for God I and II. These are used today by A.R.E. affiliated meditation groups all over the world, which use these source books along with workbooks which have been created more recently. Harmon Bro, Ph.D., who was present at more than 500 readings, wrote of this phenomenon in his book Edgar Cayce On Dreams (1968) that "[Cayce] insisted that what people saw in [his work] was not a unique principle, though it might be striking. They were seeing the operation of laws, quite natural laws. They were seeing laws that they themselves could learn to use."

What could be described as the source of Edgar Cayce's channeled material? It is apparent that a self induced, full-blown hypnotic trance was occurring, with resultant special body/etheric conditions. For example, a reading stopped abruptly and he had to be called back into waking consciousness when a note was passed over Cayce's prone body to Gertrude. Readings explained that the source of information for a subject came from their subconscious, in combination with Cayce's direct access to the superconscious, the state of unlimited awareness available to all of us as spiritually evolving souls. As Herbert Puryear described the process in The Edgar Cayce Primer (1982) "...the subconscious may either distort or enhance man's access to the divine within...for a channel to be consistently accurate or helpful, then, one must be able to tap the superconscious on a regular basis. And this Edgar Cayce did with remarkable frequency and accuracy. "

Cayce detailed the source of superconscious information regarding a person (whom he always described as "the entity") as coming from a sphere he referred to as "God's book of remembrance" and sometimes as the "Akashic records." In a collection of reading excerpts grouped by subject known as the Individual Reference File (1970, 1976) lie descriptions of this sphere. A reference to this is found in the following excerpt, quoted verbatim from the unconscious Cayce:

"Upon time and space is written the thoughts, the deeds, the activities of an entity, as in relationships to its environs, its hereditary influence; as directed, or judgment drawn by or according to what the entity's ideal is. Hence, as it has been oft called, the record is God's book of remembrance; and each entity, each soul, as the activities of a single day of an entity in the material world, either makes some good or some bad or indifferent, depending upon the entity's application of self towards that which is the ideal manner for the use of time, opportunity and the expression of that for which each soul enters a material manifestation." [1650-1, 1938]

The main thrust of Cayce's advice to people is that healing comes from within, and that all of us have access to that Spirit which will bring it forth. Dr. Puryear reminds us of that wisdom when he writes in The Edgar Cayce Primer (1982) that "when anyone came [to Cayce] as hundreds did, with questions about decisions or guidance regarding choices, they were told again and again to turn within. He assured them all that no matter how far astray they had gone, they could meet God within the temple of their own bodies."

The readings delineated specific ways to attune the physical and mental aspects our personal existence to the spiritual, including the study of our dreams. Daily meditation was advised to help us put aside our limitations and move through the vast area of the unconscious towards our Divine truth through this process of attunement. Affirmations were given in this regard, the most famous one being known today as the one which is given to beginning students in the Search for God Study Group, "Be still, and know that I am God."

Today, the A.R.E. exists not only as the library which houses the readings, indexed in such a way that the information is readily accessible on any subject, but provides a place for conferences on healing and spirituality. As a membership organization, it assists people and groups (such as the Search for God Study Groups) in their study and analysis of the Cayce information. There is a bookstore inside the large, newly refurbished A.R.E building, which also contains a lovely meditation room overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

In the A.R.E. Bookstore, which is also available on the internet, many books published through the A.R.E. Press can be found, as well as related literature. The Heritage Store in Virginia Beach carries many of the Cayce remedies that were originally formulated in the readings themselves, as well as other health products. They are also available through the internet.Notable books on Cayce include There Is A River by Thomas Sugrue; Edgar Cayce, The Sleeping Prophet by Jess Stearn; and many others in addition to the references quoted above. The A.R.E. Library, located on Atlantic Avenue and 67th Street in Virginia Beach is open to anyone who enters and provides direct access to copies of the readings while there, as well as collected books.
