Calcite
Description: Calcite is an abundant crystal which comes in many colors, shades of white, gray, green, yellow, black, blue, brown, or red. It is naturally colorless or white, becoming colored only when other compounds are mixed in with it. Crystallized forms of calcite include masses, grains, stalactites, scalenohedrons (twelve-faced crystals) and rhombohedrons (six-faced crystals).
Location: Some spectacular calcite outcrop locations include the Verdon Gorge in France; Malham Cove in North Yorkshire, England; the Ha Long Bay National Park in Vietnam; and the Cumberland Plateau, Tennessee. Calcite commonly occurs in cave deposits and in veins rich in carbonate minerals and quartz. Some popular calcite cave deposits in the United States can be seen at Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico; Mammoth cave, Kentucky; Wind Cave, South Dakota and numerous others. Outstanding “dogtooth spar” varieties can be found at Pugh Quarry, Ohio; Cornwall, England and Elmwood, Tennessee. “Iceland spar” varieties can be found in Eskifjord, Iceland and in Mexico.
Astrological Sign: Cancer
Spiritual Uses: Calcite has a very unique optical quality called double refraction. If a line is drawn on a piece of paper and a piece of calcite placed over it, the line will appear to be doubled when you look through the stone. Because of this property, Calcite is used to “double the power” in rituals, and is placed on the altar or worn during the ritual. It is useful in multi-directional energy distribution, and results have shown that energy directed towards the center of the crystal separates and returns at twice the intensity (again evidence of its “double power”). It is an excellent stone to use while studying the arts and sciences. When placed upon a certain chakra, Calcite has not only cleared and activated that chakra, but also had a clearing effect for the other chakras.
Physical Uses: In the building industry, calcite is used as a component in cement, a filler in paint, and as a structural and ornamental stone. Crushed calcite (lime) is used to mark the lines on a playing field. Clear crystals were once used to make polarizing prisms, and they are still used today in optical instruments. Calcite is very beneficial for cleansing the organs, bones, joints, and for sharpening the memory. Carrying Calcite is a great help in boosting your memory, and it can also help its user draw more insight from personal experience and books making the information easier to remember. Because Calcite helps to calm the mind in this way, it can help one to better decide which parts of one’s life could benefit from change. Calcite is an energy amplifier and when placed under pressure, releases electrical impulses.
Different Types: Clear Calcite: can be used in spirituality rituals, perfect to use as a focus of contemplation during meditation, Pink Calcite: is centering, grounding, and calming, and is used in love rituals, Blue Calcite: is a healing stone when worn on the body, and is worn during purification ceremonies, Green Calcite: draws money and prosperity to the household, and is especially effective when surrounded by flaming green candles every morning for a few minutes, Orange Calcite: is a protective stone that lends energy to the body when held.
