Crystal Skulls

A great mystery surrounding crystals recently has been the discovery of thirteen crystal skulls of apparently ancient origins in parts of Mexico, Central America and South America http://www.world-mysteries.com/sar_6_1.htm. Some of these skulls are believed to be between 5,000 and 36,000 years old. Although research is still being done on the skulls, their origin remains unknown.

The most famous and well-known of all the crystal skulls is the Mitchell-Hedges Skull. The story of the skull’s discovery is an interesting one and further illustrates the enigma of these crystals and what they mean to us.

“The man the crystal skull is named after, British explorer F.A. Mitchell-Hedges, apparently fabricated the entire account of how he discovered the skull while exploring in Belize with his daughter in 1924. The real story is that he purchased the skull at an auction in London, in 1943. The skull now resides with Mitchell-Hedges’ daughter Anna in Canada. It is sometimes called the “Skull of Doom.”

A fascinating feature of the crystal skull is that it is a virtually anatomically correct replica of a human skull. It weighs a total of 11.7 pounds and is slightly smaller than an actual human skull. When permission was granted in 1970 by the Mitchell-Hedges estate for studies to be performed on the skull, “the skull revealed a whole array of anomalies.” (http://www.crystallinks.com/crystalskulls.htm) The researchers found that the skull and jaw had both been carved with total disregard to the natural crystal axis in the quartz. “Modern crystal sculptors always take into account the axis, or orientation of the crystal’s molecular symmetry, because if they carve “against the grain,” the piece is bound to shatter—even with the use of lasers and other high-tech cutting methods.” (http://www.world-mysteries.com)

Also, the length of time that it would have taken people to create such a relic as the crystal skull is enormous. The laboratories in which the Mitchell-Hedges skull was carved could find no microscopic scratches on the crystal which would indicate it had been carved with metal instruments. The best hypotheses given for the skull’s making is that it was roughly hewn out with diamonds, and then the detail work was meticulously done with a gentle solution of silicon sand and water. This lengthy process would have required hourly labor adding up to 300 years to complete.

The mystery of the making of this crystal skull could provide evidence of the use of some form of lost technology, the likes of which we have no equivalent today.

There are many differing opinions as to what the purpose of the skull might have been. Richard Garvin is the author of a book about the crystal skull and he believes the skull was designed to be placed over an upward shining beam. The result, with the various light transfers and prismatic effects, would illuminate the entire skull and cause the sockets to become glowing eyes. The researchers who studied the skull in 1970 tried this technique, and reported that the skull, “lights up like it was on fire.”

Many eyes have gazed upon the crystal skull, with many different experiences resulting. People have reported the skull changing color, a dark spot forming on the right side of the skull and slowly blackening the entire skull, then receding back to clear. Others have witnessed strange scenes reflected in the eye sockets, scenes of buildings and other objects. Ringing noises have also been heard emanating from within the skull, and a distinct glow from no known light source has been seen surrounding the skull, similar to an aura, for up to six minutes.

As to what it might have been used for by those who created it, well, this no one can really answer. Frank Dorland, the leader of the studies performed on the crystal skull, has said, the “crystal stimulates an unknown part of the brain, opening a psychic door to the absolute. Crystals continuously put out electric-like radio waves. Since the brain does the same thing, they naturally interact.”
