Introduction
Ear Candling is an ancient process used by many cultures in history. It was often called ear coning, or ear cleansing, and was used in India, China, Egypt, Tibet, Aztec/Mayan cultures and even American Indians were privy to the process. Clay and stone pottery were designed for the procedure. Reeds from the Nile were used. Rolled up paper also works. These devices are still used in some traditions, but mostly cotton or linen cloth dipped in paraffin or beeswax is the process is still used today to heal ear conditions and is even taught to and practiced by medical doctors in some places.
The ancients, particularly the Egyptians also thought ear candling cleared the auras and spiritual center. Marian Brown, in her article Ear Candling—Removing a Lifetime of Debris (December 2002), explains, “It was believed to open and clear the spirit centers and refresh the auras." The ancient Egyptians performed a series of 11 ear cleansings (not more than one week apart) so as to better hear God (Kirkgaard, 2005). Many testimonials claim that ear candling can increase a sense of well-being and clear the mind.
The ear candles are rolled in a spiral fashion, dipped in the wax and left to harden. When it is used to cleanse the ear, the smallest end is placed in the outer ear canal; the opposite larger end is lit and burns. It creates a spiral movement and a vacuum that draws the excess wax in the ear canal up and out. These candles are anywhere between 3/8" to 3/4" wide and 6" to 18" long. The most common ear candle is 1/2" by 12".
Some of the conditions ear candling can cure, or at least relieve somewhat, are candida in the ear canal, parasites, fungus, pollutants, extra wax, ringing, infections, dirt, swimmer’s ear (caused by excess water in the ear canal, resulting in swelling of the ear waxes), yeast, and a multitude of other discomforts. A sign that these maladies are present or unwanted materials in the ear canal is itching, burning, imbalance, numbness, deafness and multitudes of other symptoms. When excess materials are in the ear canal, nerve endings are blocked from picking up sound frequencies (vibrations) that then cannot be “heard" through the nerve endings.
Physical balance is very dependent on the ability to hear. People who are deaf have unconsciously learned how to physically balance without the ability to hear, but people who are not deaf have not developed this alternate balancing ability. Often, people who have difficulty with balance, if asked, also report problems with their ears. The ear contains acupuncture points to every area of the physical body, the mind and the emotions through meridians. If hearing is impaired, it disturbs this delicate balance in the body.
Ear candling cleanses these nerve endings and creates a clear path for life force to flow to the body, mind and emotions. Ear candling not only affects the ear canal itself, but it also causes a chain reaction in the body. Sometimes this can trigger itchiness or inflammation of the lymphatic system, and cranial fluid is realigned. This is a good sign that the ear candling is working. The body is cleaning out the junk. It takes 24 hours for the ear wax to be regenerated. Repeated sessions could be done, more than one candle per ear can be used, and this will create terrific results in the chronic conditions of the ear canal. After this, ear candling can be done on an as-needed basis.
On the internet and in various books about ear candling, there are endless testimonies to the effectiveness of ear candling. People report regaining their physical balance, regaining hearing after long periods of not being able to hear, alleviating infections that modern medicines could not cure, relieving sinus pressure, headaches, neckaches and aching in the front of the face, not needing hearing aids anymore, or turning them down, itching stops, ringing stops, pain goes away, and all sorts of other testimonials.
How It Works
Proponents and practitioners of ear candling explain that the candles create a vacuum that sucks out wax and debris from the ear and other connected facial cavities and into the candle. Brown explains, “The vacuum is caused by the warmed air from the flame and the colder existing air moving through the hollow chamber of the candle." The smoke also assists the ear wax in coming out of the ear after the treatment. Travis Berry, director of sales and marketing at Wally’s Natural Products (a producer of ear candles) states, “The smoke particles seem to bond with ear wax particles, and allow them to fall out as flakes. They fall out naturally while you’re sleeping, showering, driving to work. Your body does this anyway. Ear candles merely aid the body in removing excess ear wax." (Valeo, 2005)
Ear candling, also known as ear coning, is practiced around the world as a method of cleansing the body and mind. Search the internet for a picture of ear candling to see just how it is done. This site provides a complete ear coning guide and much more. Ear candling is sometimes considered dangerous so consider this when practicing. Other ear candling information can be found on this website and many others. The work ear candling can achieve is far greater than that of q-tips. Aura cleansing is in many ways inclusive in the ear cleanse. Aura cleansing is the cleansing of the soul. Help ward off inner ear infection, inner infection, and other infections with ear wax candling. One symptom of a serious infection is hearing loss. One recommended home remedy to hearing loss is ear candling. Not every home remedy is safe for a child or baby so be cautious. Never play with fire without an adult.
Anatomy Of The Ear
There are three parts to the ear, the external ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. Each is integral to the process of hearing, transforming subtle invisible vibrations into sounds that the brain perceives. The outer parts of the ear rarely have problems, but the middle ear is vulnerable to bacterial, viral and fungal infections. The inner ear is responsible for balance, and is also vulnerable to infections.
The outer ear is the part that one can see, skin and cartilage, the folds of the ear.
The middle ear contains the eardrum (tympanic membrane) and is cone shaped, 1/2" across, and 1/50th" thick. This is the entrance from the outer ear to the middle ear and three tiny bones in the body (hammer, anvil and stirrup) and together they make up the ossicle. The ossicle triples the incoming sound, acting as an amplifier, and turns the sound into mechanical energy in the middle ear. This energy then passes through the oval window, an opening that sends the sound to the inner ear. As it passes through the oval window, the sound is amplified 30 times more. The middle ear is also connected to the back of the throat, and this is how air, viruses, bacteria and other materials can reach the ear canal from the nose. The Eustachian tube from the throat helps keep the middle ear air pressure equal to outside air, however, the drawback is that it is the most likely avenue for infection to enter the ear canal.
The inner ear begins after the oval window where there is a spiral shaped chamber lined with tiny hairs and filled with fluid. This spiral shaped part is called the cochlea (Latin word for snail shell) and is about 3/4" to 1/2" in diameter. The movements of the fluid, influenced by the ossical, are transmitted through the auditory nerve to the brain. Damage to the cochlea results in deafness and tinnitis (ringing in the ears). The labyrinth is several semicircular canals filled with fluid. These are made up of three connected tubes, which are then connected to the vestibular nerve. This completes the transmittal of sound to the brain. This is the part that is essential to physical balance.
Check the internet for a picture of ear coning being done. This site contains the complete ear coning guide. Ear candling is still to be practiced with caution. There is a ton of information on ear candling and aura cleansing on this site. Begin the work towards cleansing your mind body and soul. Aura cleansing can cleanse the inner as well as outer body. Infection in the ear are common, ear cleansing can sometimes minimize this. Inner ear infection can sometimes lead to hearing loss so it is essential to reduce the occurrence of them. The symptom that makes an ear infection uncomfortable is pain; no one wants to experience excessive pain when they do not have to. The home remedy for an ear infection may be ear candling. This home remedy, however, should only be attempted by an adult. A child or baby tends to get ear infections more often because their ear anatomy is different and they are typically spreading bacteria more, less conscious of the idea that germs can spread infection.
Middle Ear Infections
Infections in the middle ear, which often come through the Eustachian tube, cause inflammation and a buildup of fluids. When fluid fills the middle ear space, the chain of bones cannot act correctly because this area is supposed to be filled with air. The energy vibrations of sound are not transmitted correctly through this area, causing difficulty in hearing. Children are most prone to these problems because the Eustachian tube is shorter than in adults, thus giving the infectious materials less distance to travel before they settle in the middle ear cavity.
The most frequent factor causing middle ear infections is the Eustachian tube allowing materials to pass through. This prevents adequate ventilation of the middle ear, which needs air and perfect balance of air pressure in order to function properly. This is often called otitis media.
- Secretory otitis media: fluids from colds or allergies entering through the Eustachian tube.
- Acute serous otitis media: a bacteria or viral infection with fluids.
- Acute purulent otitis media: pus from the bacterial infection, potentially leading to a ruptured eardrum.
- Chronic otitis media: untreated bacterial infections and/or infected adenoids.
It is not uncommon to have temporary hearing loss during these infections, but hearing returns when the fluids drain. Middle ear infections are not dangerous if they are treated, but untreated middle ear infections lead to ruptured eardrums, pain and loss of hearing. Infections tend to recur if infected adenoids are not addressed.
Symptoms of Middle Ear Infections:
- temporary hearing loss
- clogged feeling in the ear
- aches and pain in the ear
- nausea/vomiting
- bleeding or pus discharged from the ear (eardrum has ruptured to relieve pressure from fluids)
- tinnitis, ringing in ears
- labyrinthitis (spinning sensation)
Most of these symptoms are relieved with ear candling, although a ruptured ear drum is a more serious concern and should be addressed by a medical doctor.
Earaches are caused when infected fluid accumulates in the middle ear and puts pressure on the eardrum from the inside. Pain in the ear is not always coming from the ear itself. It can also come from changes in the air pressure, dental difficulties, sinus problems, adenoids and tonsillitis. Eustachian tubes are often a culprit involved in earaches. The tube opens hundreds of times each day, with every third swallow or so, and especially with every yawn. If it becomes blocked, it prevents drainage from the middle ear, and also introduces unwanted fluids into the middle ear.
If you pull on the ear lobe, and you feel acute pain, this is a sure sign that there is an infection or fluids in the ear canal and this must be addressed.
Tinnitis
Tinnitis is described as ringing, buzzing, hissing or other kinds of noises in the head that are not coming from the outside. Silence is unobtainable by the person with tinnitis. These sounds are directly caused by damage to the cochlea. This is usually permanent and is caused by nerve damage. One of the sources of these inner sounds is contraction of the ear muscles. Another is the soft palate of the tongue or the uvula. Vascular noises are also a cause.
Entotic tinnitis is accompanied by deafness. In the external ear, there is wax, foreign objects, growths of bone or cartilage and causes dizziness and tinnitus. Just about any disorder in the middle or inner ear can cause tinnitus, including all types of infections and inflammation. Ear candling can help with these problems, which are less permanent than the hearing loss and tinnitis described in the previous paragraph.
Child ear candling may help reduce inner ear infection. It is a common occurrence among children to get inner infections. Probably the most important symptom of ear infection is hearing loss, hearing is an important sense, shame to loose it. Otitis media is fluid buildup in the ear. Acute otitis media could also result in hearing loss. Ear candling may be a good otitis media effusion treatment. Search the internet for an Ottis media serous picture. Chronic otitis media can be a serious problem and can cause irreversible damage. Bilateral ottis media may require antibiotics. Adult tinnitis is more rare but also occurs.
Labyrinthitis
This is where the ear’s semicircular canals become infected by bacteria, fungus or viruses. This affects your sense of balance and causes nausea, vertigo and spinning sensations. Sometimes it is a sensation of motion when there is no motion, or exaggerated motion even with the slightest of motions.
Labyrinthitis is a condition that causes the ear’s semicircular canals to become infected by bacteria, fungus or viruses. Viral infections are common especially when you live in a densely populated are. Treatment of acute symptom s is sometimes but not often difficult. Suppurative otitis media is more difficult to treat than regular old otitis media. Labyrinthitis can cause dizziness, vertigo and nausea. When the inner ear becomes flooded with fluid it throws balance off. Ear candling can dramatically reduce the occurrence of ear borne viruses. Ear candling is often considered dangerous and rightfully so. The inner ear is a delicate organ. Candida can literally destroy the ear. Infection sometimes needs antibiotics. Yeast Candida is a special species that can do much harm. Albicans are literally defined as white bodies. Diet can also affect the amount of toxins your ear can withstand. An ear cleanse using candle wax cannot be as bad as the candida symptoms.
Earwax Buildup
This is the most common cause of deafness, and is easily corrected by ear candling. It is a shame that this home remedy is overlooked by so many doctors involved in western medicine. It is a very simple solution, yet complicated procedures are used instead to correct this problem. Some of these procedures are very dangerous, particularly prescription drugs containing hydrogen peroxide, which irritate the skin of the ear canal. Water, as in the home ear flushing kits, does more harm than good by causing the earwax to swell.
Viral labyrinthitis is caused by a plethora of symptom s. Acute treatment could be ear candling. Suppurative vertigo can also be caused by imbalances in the inner ear. Ear candling is a good alternative to some antibiotics because antibiotics sometimes cause Super bugs. Inner ear cleansing is also just good hygienically. Candida is a type of yeast that causes a lot of infection. Albicans are white bodies. Simple diet changes can cleanse the ear of candida symptoms.
Cotton Tipped Swabs
This is considered dangerous by some, and necessary by others. Statistics show that many people damage their eardrums by misusing cotton tipped swabs. Also, wax can become impacted because the swab does not remove it all the time, and instead pushes it together into a harder substance, which then does not leave the ear canal. The argument for using these cotton tipped swabs touts the importance of removing as much wax as can be removed easily and gently, removing water in the outer ear after showers or swimming, and general maintenance preventing dirt and pollutants that have attached to the wax. Ear candling, however, still remains the safest and most effective way of removing these substances.
Check the internet for a Candida picture, this is a harmful bacteria that can cause infection. Some ear infections are caused by Candida; ear candling may reduce the risk of these types of infections. Ear candling is an interesting way one can clean their ear canal. It is not a cure for infections but it reduces the risk of contracting them. Symptom s in man is not always different from woman. Hofer is an artist that just happens to have the same name as bacteria. One could control the rate of infections just by using a cook book. Some foods contain a larger amount of organisms than others. Look online for a cleansing cook book. Candida Royalle is a book series interesting that they share names with bacteria as well! Some times the recipe for infection is exposure. Overgrowth of any strain of bacteria could require a cleanse. Get information free on this website about albicans and control treatment free. Male or female, it makes no difference.
What Earwax Is
The medical name for earwax is cerumen. It is glandular debris that accumulates in the ear canals. It is a chemical barrier to infection and a mechanical barrier to foreign bodies. It builds up in the outer ear. Earwax is oily and brownish, whereas drainage from the middle ear is sticky, yellowish or green, and may have a bad odor.
Who Should Not Use Ear Candling
People who have had bleeding or draining of fluids from the ear should not use this procedure. They should check with a doctor. In fact, any serious condition of the ear should be referred to a doctor. Also, people who have had recent ear or sinus surgery should not have ear candling done until full recovery has been completed, about six months. People who do not trust the candling process, or are not sure about it and feel uncomfortable about it should not proceed with ear candling. No one should be talked into it, ever.
How Many Ear Candles Per Session?
Young children or babies should only use 1/2 to 1 ear candle per ear. If more are needed, use them in a repeat session at a later time, no sooner than 24 hours. For adults 2 to 4 ear candles per ear in one candling session is maximum. Do not exceed 4 ear candles per ear, as this can cause irritation in the ear canal. Use more after 24 hours have gone by if needed.
How Often?
If the person’s condition is severe, sessions 24 hours apart are fine. It takes the ear 24 hours to replace its protective coating of wax, so it is not recommended that ear candling be done every day or use too many candles in one day. Maintenance can be done with the change of seasons, once or twice a year. Each person is different and some common sense must be used to decide when ear candling is appropriate. Generally, children and men have more earwax and might want to be done a little more often than women.
Ear candling is an excellent ear cleansing practice but it must be used with caution. Ear wax candle s can sometimes be dangerous when improperly used. When properly used ear candles are great at removing a plug or excess buildup. Peroxide can be used to remove any remaining external wax. Peroxide is an excellent external agent that keeps things clean. Impacted wax must be cleaned or it could lead to infection. Bee wax candles seem to be less toxic than paraffin wax. Bee s produces a natural wax. Excessive wax can be emulsified with mineral oil. Mineral oil should not be used in the presence of a flame. Online there are various kit s one can use to flush the ear canal. The cleaner your ear the less susceptible you will be to infection. Infections are usually problem s of sanitation. Professional opinions should be seriously considered before trying ear candling.
Ear Candling Process
Supplies Needed:
- Ear Candles
- Scissors, for cutting the burning ash off candle as it burns
- Bowl of water, for putting out hot ashes
- Aluminum pan, with hole for the candle to fit through
- Matches or lighter, for lighting ear candles
- Pillow, for person being candled to lay head on
- Fire retardant cover, for person, pillow, and surface person is laying on
- Lotion, if face massage is to be performed
- Baggies, for candle debris and earwax to be disposed
- A friend to watch the candle and keep the person being treated company (recommended!)
Make sure you have everything ready before you begin candling, for the process needs your focused attention and can be dangerous for the person being candled.
The Ear Candling Procedure
- The person to be treated lies on his or her side on a bed, couch, massage table or the floor with the ear facing up. Place a pillow under the head.
- Cover the head and shoulder with a fire retardant sheet or fabric. Fire retardant spray can be bought at hardware stores and can be sprayed on most materials for effective protection. If no fire retardant materials are available, use moist towels for protection.
- Put ear candle through the hole at the center of the aluminum pan, and place the narrow end of the candle into the ear canal. It does not have to be pushed in far; just a snug seal needs to be formed in the opening of the ear. Have the person being candled hold the candle in the position that is most comfortable if you cannot find this yourself. Remember not to tilt the candle, or push it in a way that closes the end of it or causes it to be blocked from creating the vacuuming effect.
- Light the candle. After it is lit, watch to make sure no smoke escapes form the bottom of the candle in the ear. If there is smoke, reset the candle and recreate the seal. You can pull on the ear, turn the candle, or tilt the candle. Each person’s ear is unique, and has different ways in which it folds. If the smoke does not stop escaping from the bottom of the candle, stop and start over again.
- If you plan on doing a face massage, begin this now while the candle is burning. (Directions for face massage are at the end of these directions for candling.)
- At the 1" to 11/2" mark, once the candle has burned this far, lift the bowl of water up to the candle and cut the ashes off, just above the flame, into the bowl of water. Don’t move the candle. Keep repeating this process down to the 4" mark. Never let the candle burn down more than 4" away from the person’s ear, or earwax that has already been removed may drip back down into the ear canal.
- As the process of the candling takes place, the person should hear crackling sounds. If not, the candle is not positioned correctly. Adjust the candle if needed. If there is still no crackling sound, the candle may be blocked with wax, so check it by pulling it out of the person’s ear gently.
- At the 4" mark from the ear, pull the candle out of the ear, holding the aluminum pan as you do so, and pull both away from the person being candled. Move both over to the bowl of water, then take the candle out of the aluminum pan and douse the flame in the water.
- Cut the burnt part off the candle and open up the remaining part of the candle so you can see exactly what has been removed from the ear canal. There should be earwax and dry flaky wax in at least the first inch or two of the candle. Light brown or yellowish dry flaky wax is from the candle itself. Oily darker wax is from the ear. White powdery wax may be yeast.
- Most people do not get a lot of earwax with one candle, so you may need to repeat these steps with two or three more candles to get maximum results. The first candle often just gets things going, but the next two or three get the true infections or debris out. Start the next candle right away. Do not use more than 4 candles in one day per ear. It may take repeated candling over a period of two or more weeks to get the true results if the condition is chronic.
- When finished with the first ear, have the person turn over and do the other.
- All debris from ear candling must be thrown away in a sanitary fashion in order to avoid re-introducing viruses, infections, fungus and other materials that may be in the earwax that was removed.
Face Massage
There are two techniques for the face massage in the fingers. There is rubbing gently with thumb or forefingers, or finger-walking with the middle and index fingers. Always move toward the ear. The massage can help move debris and infections in the sinus passageways.
3 paths of movement for the Face Massage
- Start above the beginning of the eyebrow (above the nose) and move smoothly outward and down toward the ear, crossing the bottom edge of the temple.
- Start at the top of the eyebrow above the nose and move to the cheekbone, then back toward the nose, crossing above the cheekbone, then move around the bottom of the cheekbone and cross over back to the ear.
- Start at the chin and move up the jaw line toward the ear. Use lotion or oil to do the face massage.
Now, The Warnings!
Up to this point, I have included all the great things about ear candling. Now you will be surprised that it will seem as if I debunk everything about ear candling that has been said! Ear candling has many supporters who hail its benefits and offer many personal testimonials. Likewise, it also has criticism, much from the medical community, with personal testimonials of its dangers. It has helped chronic conditions, but it has also created them. It is important to know the facts. Very few people have had bad experiences with ear candles, but the ones who have had bad experiences, their stories are worth knowing so that you can be fairly warned about ear candling and its track record. There are very few reports such as these, and they may be due to faulty candlemaking or even faulty use of the candles, but they exist and you should know about them.
Why Doctors Don’t Use Ear Candling
Sometimes it is a simple case of doctors being unaware of such a simple solution. Most medical institutions, especially those in the USA, do not teach students about ear candling. Most ear doctors have never even heard of ear candling. They will flush, scrape, vacuum, insert tubes, prescribe medication, or use anesthesia in order to remove waxy buildup, but few of them are willing to try ear candling. Medicine is big business, but ear candling is the exception. Ear candles cost several dollars at a health food store and can be done at home with a friend in half an hour. Be wary of practitioners (massage, medical, body worker, or otherwise) who offer the service at high prices. Ancient remedies and home remedies are often cheap and simple enough to perform without the aid of a physician. Therefore the medical community (including the FDA) has little incentive to use these remedies, and often is very opposed to them. Again, ear candling is no exception. Instead they would like to propose the use of expensive procedures and prescriptions, which in turn creates more money for them in their practice.
Ear candling is the tool of wax removal. Ear candling along with hydrogen peroxide can dissolve record wax. The cone shaped candle can remove even the biggest blockage. Black or dark ear wax could be cause d by dirt. Check an online photo to see if you have a harmful earwax problem. Ear candling could be used on the cat or dog too, consult a professional before attempting that though. Just a drop of high concentration hydrogen peroxide can start dissolving the skin, so be careful.
Opponents Rebuke The Effectiveness Of Ear Candling
Those opposed to ear candling state that the vacuum effect of candling is a myth and the substance left in the candle is nothing more than the melted wax from the candle, colored by the smoke. Lisa M. L. Dryer, M.D. in her article “Why Ear Candling Is Not a Good Idea" (April, 2005), states, “Since wax is sticky, the negative pressure needed to pull wax from the canal would have to be so powerful that it would rupture the eardrum in the process." Also, the ear wax is a healthy part of the natural cleaning and protecting process of the ear, coating the ear drum, preventing infection, and moving debris out of the ear.
Another man experimented with taking pictures of an ear candle being held inside a clear vial in order to see what happens as it burned. Pieces of powdery dust dropped down into the vial from the burning, which would end up in the ear canal. He also noted that there was the waxy buildup exactly the same as an ear candle used in an actual person’s ear even in the candle that was used over the vial. These pictures can be easily found with a simple search on the internet using the words “ear candling." I noticed, however, that the home experiment showed that the candle was burned far below its proper level of 3-4 inches from the end. This could account for some of the negative results.
The woman who reported that ear candle wax dripped onto her eardrum has posted lengthy details about her experience and cautions the public about ear candling dangers. I agree with her that it is dangerous but I don’t agree that ear candling is a useless procedure that doesn’t work. I believe that her ear candling session was administered incorrectly by burning the ear candle too low.
Possible Dangers
Opponents not only claim that ear candling is ineffective, they believe it is unnecessary as the ear needs wax and naturally cleanses itself. It could potentially be dangerous if hot wax dripped is into the ear. One woman reported a long, expensive and painful recovery after hot wax dripped on her eardrum, most likely because the candle was burned too low. The American Academy of Otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat specialists) discourage the practice. However, besides home experiments reported by individuals in testimonials, there is little or no scientific inquiries into the effectiveness of ear candling one way or the other. It has successfully been used for hundreds of years by many different peoples, but this is not considered significant evidence by the medical community and the FDA. Of course, this is typical of “alternative" health care.
Ear candling is not a cure-all, but many people have benefited from the alleviation of minor cases of ear problems. At UMS, however, we are not health care professionals. As with all consumption of physical health products, we encourage you to be pro-active with your health care, educating yourself in the research and history, and using the resources that you have come to trust, be that your instincts, family physician, etc. We caution you to learn how to use ear candles correctly if you are going to use them. Accidents occur mostly by burning the candle too far down or mishandling the candle point in the ear canal. Also, realize that as a metaphysical practitioner, your insurance nor your degree will cover any kind of lawsuit if you incorporate ear candling into your practice. We suggest you use it only on yourself and your friends. However, teaching a class in ear candling might be the best way to go if you would like to introduce ear candling to your community. Good luck and best wishes for health and well-being. Enjoy your newfound technique for another route to health!
Ear candling definitely has its risks. Homeopathic Candling can be good when practiced the right way. Olive oil seems to be a fireless option for loosening ear wax. Oils seem to mix with waxes unlike water, olive or other oil can be mixed in to a homogeneous mixture. Dark ear wax may signify a greater amount of pollutants in the environment around you. That darker wax must be taken out somehow. You must get the wax out of the ear because any toxins can be potentially harmful to the internal organs of the ear. The membrane tympanic in side the ear must be kept free of debris or it can greatly reduce ones ability to hear. The tympanic membrane along with the basilar membrane helps propagate sound into the right places inside the ear. Perforation or ruptured membranes can lead to cochlea dysfunction. The eustachian tube is another common blockage site. You would not want to break any of the tiny ossicle bones in your ear or you will have no sense of volume.
