The medical name for earwax is cerumen. It is glandular debris that accumulates in the ear canals. It is a chemical barrier to infection and a mechanical barrier to foreign bodies. It builds up in the outer ear. Earwax is oily and brownish, whereas drainage from the middle ear is sticky, yellowish or green, and may have a bad odor.
