Traditionally there are four symbols that can assist the healing process of Reiki. There are mantras that go with each symbol. However, the traditional Japanese masters have tried to keep these symbols and mantras a secret just as they have tried to keep the art of Reiki a secret. Recently the symbols have now been published by modern Reiki healers, but there are many different versions. Symbols and mantras should only be used at the Reiki 2 level and all levels require attunements by a teacher. Therefore, if you want the mantras and symbols then you should learn them from a teacher.

Nevertheless, I have included four of the traditional symbols in this course. The first symbol is called Cho Ku Rei or the "Power Symbol." It looks like a spiral with a line down the middle and a hat at the top. It can also be drawn as a mirror image. It is the first symbol to learn because it has many general purposes. It is used to energize patients or objects such as food or herbs. It can give spiritual protection, cleanse negative energies, and help manifest prayers. Sometimes it is used to clear rooms or objects after a treatment or at the end of a session. Trace your finger over the picture below so that you can get the feel of it.

Another symbol that a student will learn at the Reiki 2 level is called Sei Hei Ki or the "Mental and Emotional Symbol." This symbol is a squiggly backwards 3 shape with a curved line which has two half circles on it. It is used to protect physically, cleanse, and align the heart and mind. It helps soothe troubled emotions or stressful mentality. It can clear blocked energy and help regain calmness. Trace this picture with your finger so you can get a feel for it.

You can draw symbols in many ways. One way is to drawn the symbol with one finger on the palm of the opposing hand. Then give Reiki with the hand that had the symbol drawn onto it. Another way is to draw the symbol in the air above the patient or in front of yourself. You can draw the symbol on a piece of paper or in the dirt or sand. Even simply visualizing the symbol will work. Chanting the names of the symbols is also good if you can pronounce Japanese words properly. If the symbol's lines or name pronunciation is not perfect, don't worry. The intent matters most.

Beyond the traditional symbols there are many other symbols, which are used in the various types of Reiki. Different Reiki masters have also channeled symbols and used them in their practice. The symbol is not as important as the intent. If your intent is true, the symbol should work even if you do not draw it in its proper manner. There is extensive information about symbols on various pages on the internet. To find out more, first decide which type of Reiki you want to explore. The types of Reiki are listed with their websites in the last section of this course.
