Introduction
The Vibrational Nature Of Reality

Reality cannot be found except in One single source, because of the interconnection of all things with one another.
& mdash;Gottfried Leibniz (1670)

With compassion, one can love unconditionally. With unconditional love, one can heal boundlessly. With boundless energy, one can ascend spiritually.
& mdash;Yogi Sharanananda

What is vibrational healing? To answer this question, it is necessary to attempt to understand the vibrational nature of reality. Human understanding of what matter is composed of, and of how different forms of energy interact, is mostly based on two sources, metaphysical psychic/intuitive/direct knowledge, and scientific experimentation/measurement/verification. This is such an exciting time on planet earth, because science is now proving and verifying what spiritual seekers and teachers have been telling humanity from the beginning. The truth being measured and verified is that time and space are one, that individual particles are also coherent waves of energy, and that what we based our assumptions about reality on as a culture, the Newtonian view of reality, focusing exclusively on what can be observed and measured, is a very limiting and elementary approach understanding the truth of the matter.

Having recognised that the individual points in Newton's absolute space have no physical reality, we must now inquire what remains of this concept at all.
& mdash;Max Born

What is "the truth of the matter?" The most ancient spiritual teachings we know about tell us that the material universe is an illusion, that what we can see and touch is Maya, a grand dance of thoughtforms and projections, a myriad of mirrors, reflecting the light and shadow of the mind. What does this really mean? How can we integrate this understanding, and apply it to our experience? How do we interface with this alternate version of reality that is being shown to be the truth of things? Practitioners working with what has come to be called "vibrational medicine" are reviving this ancient science, utilizing color, sound, light, crystals, water, electromagnetics, aroma, and other energetic modalities to help people stabilize and raise their vibration, and hold more natural, healthful resonances within their consciousness and their energetic and physical bodies. In this course, we will explore these ideas, looking at a variety of these modalities, and we will also check out the research that is scientifically verifying the effectiveness of the practice of vibrational healing.

The Quantum Connection

"If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear as it is. Infinite."
& mdash;William Blake

The Institute of Noetic Sciences is a Metaphysical think tank/retreat center located on 200 acres in Petaluma, California. They put out a study guide to go with the movie "What The Bleep Do We Know." The guide gives some great information on the history of the paradigm shift from classical physics to quantum physics "in a nutshell." (By the way, we are still in the midst of this shift!)

From the study guide, we learn that the basic foundational ideas in classical physics are the "four basic assumptions about the fabric of reality that correspond more or less to how the world appears to our senses." They are:

  1. Reality: The assumption that the physical world is "objectively real...that it exists independently of whether anyone is observing it..."
  2. Locality: The assumption that objects occupy a fixed position in space, and "can [only] be influenced through direct contact."
  3. Causality: The assumption that the "arrow of time points only in one direction...that cause and effect sequences occur only in that order."
  4. Continuity: The assumption that "space and time are smooth..." with no gaps or jumps occurring.

This view of reality was rocked when it was discovered that light could act like particles, "...like billiard balls...separate objects with specific locations in space;" or like waves, similar to "undulations in water...not localized but spread out...soft in that they can interact with each other without destroying each other." With the acceptance of the mysterious wave/particle phenomenon of atoms, a new set of foundational "rules" emerged to attempt to explain this fantastic discovery of the nature of the building blocks of matter. The shift from the "four basic assumptions" follows:

  1. Reality: The idea that "things" exist in a concrete way, independent of conscious awareness, can no longer be assumed. We now know that the nature of matter can change when observed.
  2. Locality: The idea that objects have a fixed position in space, and can only be affected by direct contact, gave way to the understanding of non-locality, which says that "objects that are apparently separate are actually connected instantaneously through space-time."
  3. Causality: The idea that time exists as a linear dimension is now known to be a misunderstanding, and that we could more accurately say "sequences of events [or the lack of...] depend on the perspectives (technically called the frame of reference) of the observers."
  4. Continuity: The idea that space and time are predictable and simply defined is no longer viable; we now know that "reality" is not the stable construct we once assumed it was, and that "space and time are neither smooth nor contiguous."

Quantum physics has now proven that everything we see is an illusion, that the physical world is an illusion...Everything is made up of interacting energy. Energy interacts on a subatomic level to form energy fields which physicists call subatomic particles. These subatomic energy fields interact to form atomic energy fields, atoms, which interact to form molecules. Everything in the physical world is made up of interacting atomic and molecular energy fields.
& mdash;Robert Burney, The Dance Of Wounded Souls (1995) Joy To You And Me Enterprises, Cambria, CA

There is a huge paradigm shift occurring in human consciousness, at this moment, as the stable, safe, dependable, predictable world we once inhabited, is falling away like the leaves on a tree in the fall, while the spring of understanding, the dawn of humanity's realization of the magical, mysterious, fantastic nature of creation is blossoming in the minds and hearts of men and women all over the planet. We may have to winter in the void, but our awakening in spring will reveal a brand new world, our conscious creation!

As this information becomes available, through both pathways, science and direct knowing, these two, once separate paths are coming together. As these parallels merge, much energy is being released, and we experience this in the seemingly extreme polarities on the planet right now, extreme weather, increases in violence and cruelty toward others, destruction of the delicate ecosystem, and an increase in disease and illness. All these extreme negative energies are coming to the surface, while at the same time, amazing and beautiful revolutions of heart and mind are awakening as well. The seemingly "negative" occurrences are a symptom of this merging of parallels, as these once deeply buried aggressions and stuck thoughtforms and emotional energies are purged from the planet. As we bring our attention to the growing wave of awakening consciousness, as we realize what we are truly capable of, as we connect with the truth of "who we are," we are, each and every one of us, experiencing the affects of these merging parallels in our own lives. This is the place to begin to mend, within.

The many forms of vibrational healing can be effective ways of facilitating this shift, integrating our experiences, as we wake up more and more to the fact that we have one foot in this world and one foot in the next, as we recognize the truth of our own multidimensionality. Through the use of the universal languages of color, light, sound, aroma, crystals, living plant energies, homeopathics, direct transmissions of information and resonances, and other vibrational communications, we can align ourselves with this shift, and move through it with grace and clarity.

Maya And The Holographic Nature Of Reality

"We see the world, not the way it is, but the way we are."
& mdash;Talmud

In Light Emerging (1993), Barbara Brennan develops the understanding of a holographic universe, of aholographic view of oneself, and of the healing process. She introduces the idea (based on research and theoriesdeveloped by Stanford University brain physiologist, Dr. Karl Pribram, (1969) that what we perceive with oursenses is our brain's interpretation of energetic information. Our brains, in this view, are capable of focusing onenergetic information, interpreting it, and projecting a holographic image for the eyes to perceive. It also createsscents out of information received by the nose, and sound out of energetic signals that the ears perceive. Brennandescribes this process as Pribram theorized it:

"Pribram states that our brain acts like the hologram that projects the true reality of the energy beamsinto an illusory apple [or whatever we are focusing on]. Our brain, using our five senses, picks up the energy fieldof whatever we bring our attention to in the moment and translates that energy field into an object. What thismeans is that the object we perceive represents the secondary reality. It is but a signature of a deeperreality...from which the projection of the object comes.

"Pribram says that all our senses act together in a way to create the illusion of our world around us...sofar, only the hologram using the visible sense & mdash;light from the laser beam & mdash;has been built. Probably, some day, holograms using the kinisthetic, auditory, olfactory, and gustatory senses will also be built."When we begin to think about the world in terms of this information, we tend to have a radical shift in ourunderstanding. If everything is composed of vibrational frequencies, and our brains have the ability to interpretthese frequencies to construct our experience, how does this affect how we will choose to approach our health?

Vibrational Medicine Past Present And Future

"When all your energies are brought into harmony, your body flourishes. And when your body flourishes, your soul has a soil in which it can blossom in the world. These are the ultimate reasons for energy medicine & mdash;to prepare the soil and nurture the blossom."
& mdash;Donna Eden, "Energy Medicine"

The understanding that matter is really "condensed energetic information" has been around since before recorded history. Those who have gained their knowing directly from the source of the information, who have had the ability to tune into the vibrations of crystals, the resonance of sound, the rays of colors, the energies of Gaia, the sun, plants, animals, and the communications of non-physical beings, have, throughout time, used their knowledge to help others, utilizing what we now commonly call vibrational medicine.

The ancient Egyptians created healing temples in which sunlight would pour through glass or quartz prisms, bathing patients in the healing rays of the color spectrum. Within these temples, they also used sound to achieve vibrational resonance. The Tibetans have used "singing bowls" for hundreds of years, using the clear tones to release stuck energies in the chakras and tune the frequencies of the energetic bodies to achieve balance and harmony. The Chinese have developed, over thousands of years, a very sophisticated system of vibrational medicine, using acupuncture, moxabustion, and knowledge of the energetic "meridian" lines in the body to restore health, vitality, and free flow to the energetic system. Indigenous people all over the planet have been using very effective, time tested methods of balancing, harmonizing, and integrating energy fields for many generations, with powerful practices being used by Hawaiian, Native American, Aboriginal Australian, and Maori of New Zealand, as well as many others. Vibrational medicine is the oldest and most appropriate form of healing, because it is really about coming into harmony with all of creation, to realize our true form and potential!

Everything has a vibration. Each and every stone, star, plant, animal, human, etc., has a unique vibrational signature, which is the expression of divinity within form. This planet, Gaia, is a vastly complex experiment in the balancing of millions of vibrational frequencies, to realize a harmonic state, to create "Heaven on Earth." Within these myriad vibrational frequencies, polarities exist, and it is in the manifestation of polar states that all beings are challenged to become "grounded," and continue to maintain resonance at the unique vibrational frequency that is his or her natural state.

In an essay entitled Vibrational Therapies, vibrational medicine is defined: "Vibrational Therapy, also called Vibrational Medicine and Energy Medicine, is based on the scientific principles that all matter vibrates to a precise frequency and that by using resonant vibration, balance of matter can be restored." This clear definition leads naturally to the understanding that the process of matching resonant vibrations to restore harmonic function is a safe and highly effective treatment for dis-ease, mental and emotional imbalance, and restoration of the vibrant health that our amazing physical systems are capable of!

Another great essay can be found at MSN Vibrational Healing, written by Kellie Jo Conn. I really like her description of frequencies and how they translate to matter: "When we speak of vibration, we are merely using another synonym for frequency. Different frequencies of energy reflect varying rates of vibration. We know that matter and energy are two different manifestations of the same primary energetic substance of which everything in the universe is composed, including our physical and subtle bodies. The vibratory rate of this universal energy determines the density of its expression as matter. Matter which vibrates at a very low frequency is referred to as physical matter. That which vibrates at speeds exceeding light velocity is known as subtle matter. Subtle matter is as real as dense matter, its vibratory rate is simply faster. In order to therapeutically alter our subtle bodies, we must administer energy that vibrates at frequencies beyond the physical plane. Vibrational medicines contain such high-frequency subtle energies."

There are a great many forms of healing modalities that address this frequency maintenance and enhancement, and as we come more and more fully into the Aquarian age, we are beginning to gain clarity about the interplay of energy fields, and we are receiving and realizing more and more information about these methods of healing. Like the ancient Atlanteans, Egyptians, and Mayans, we are evolving our consciousness, and beginning to fit the pieces of the puzzle together, to understand ourselves as creative spiritual beings, and to live with the intention of continuing this evolutionary path, awake and with focus, to continue to unfold the mystery, and to see our true faces.

Many of us are leading the way, and we are calling ourselves "lightworkers." Many lightworkers are receiving and implementing new information concerning our understanding of vibrational medicine, and so this field is very, very quickly and constantly evolving. Ten years ago, vibrational medicine was still considered a fringe phenomena in the West. Homeopathy and Reiki were just beginning to gain in popularity, and color, light, and sound therapies were being practiced by some. Today, there are countless forms of vibrational medicine, and many of these modalities, such as reiki, acupuncture, aromatherapy, homeopathy, and flower essences have become popular therapies, which are now used and accepted by even the mainstream people who are not specifically spiritual in their approach to life. Lightworkers know, and others are coming to understand, that all healing is essentially vibrational, and that all dis-ease begins with an imbalance in the energetic fields. It won't be long before this truth becomes even more mainstream and revolutionizes the quality of life on the planet.

Many are beginning to foresee a time when doctors and hospitals will no longer exist as they do now. One possibility is that in the not too distant future, people will undergo energetic readings by medical intuitives, trained in the scanning of the energetic systems of the body/mind/spirit. The practitioner will receive information, and give a report to the client, helping them choose an appropriate vibrational and/or traditional western therapy. Many therapies will also be used to compliment each other for optimal results, such as homeopathy with reiki, acupuncture with flower essences, toning with aromatherapy, color with crystal healing, sun therapies with living foods, reflexology with light therapy, and many more. Even western medicine and vibrational medicine will and can be combined for effective results. Soon people will begin to become experts at recognizing what climates, geographical locations, foods, people, plants, animals, fabrics, stones, sounds, smells, colors, thoughts, and emotions act to support, maintain, and/or raise their vibrational frequency. Many who are sensitive to energy are already doing this, yet soon this will be a commonplace way of maintaining optimal health and vitality as we continue our planetary and personal evolutionary path. After all, over the past fifteen years, health food stores have become a huge and profitable business venture, and this in itself shows that mainstream consciousness is rising to meet new views on health and well-being.

A Closer Look: Vibrational Medicine As A Holistic Approach To Health

"The art of healing comes from nature and not from the physician. Therefore, the physician must start from nature with an open mind."
& mdash;Paracelsus

"The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease."
& mdash;Thomas Edison

Vibrational medicine, for some, is a complementary choice to use along with more modern, conventional medicines. Others are recognizing the need for a revolution in our thinking about wellness as a culture. The rise of modern medicine is largely based on the Newtonian view of science and the body, and as we move further away from this view of reality in our cutting edge sciences, it is necessary to look at how we have come to view our bodies and our understandings of health, to see where the mistaken assumptions of the past have shaped how we take care of ourselves.

This is not to say modern medicine does not have its value. It undoubtedly has some applications, but we definitely need a little perspective. We need a wake-up call, to shake us from the complacency of allowing someone else to be responsible for our health. When we give someone else responsibility for our health, we give up our power, and we stop being who we are. We get further and further from our own truth. Richard Gerber, in A Practical Guide To Vibrational Medicine (2001), gives a comparison of conventional medicine and vibrational medicine, and how each views the world. I have included it here to emphasize these points.

Comparing Conventional Medicine and Vibrational Medicine Worldviews

CONVENTIONAL MEDICINE MODEL

VIBRATIONAL MEDICINE MODEL

One of the most important, and radical notions of holistic medicine, that is, medicine which addresses the whole person, body, mind, and spirit, is the idea of personal responsibility. If our thoughts directly affect our sensory perceptions, if our feelings color our experience, if our cells respond to the electrochemical and energetic messages we offer in each and every moment, how will we decide, with this understanding, to approach our health and well-being?

For many, this is a tough question. As a culture, we have become quite dependent on doctors, who have spent many years of their lives sacrificing to understand the body, to understand all the chemical interactions in the body, and to understand how the introduction of hundreds of different chemicals will affect the body's functions. They have learned how to cut into the body and apply fantastical methods, using incredibly precise technologies, to seemingly work miracles. Who are we to question their knowledge, their expertise? Especially when, embarrassing as it is, we know so very little ourselves about the workings of our own bodies, our own extraordinary physical systems. When we are ill, or in pain, when we are feeling how very vulnerable we are, especially when we are in crisis and scared, afraid to suffer, afraid to die, it is very comforting to think that someone else has the answers. It is so much easier to let someone who is very wise, all-knowing in these things, take over, and heal us. In some ways, for many of us, it may take us back to when we were children, before we had to worry about so many responsibilities, someone bigger, more experienced, and wise in the ways of healing, could help us, hold us, comfort us, and make everything okay.

The problem with this scenario is that everything is not okay within this model. There are many problems associated with modern medicine. Yet the root of these problems lies in people giving up personal responsibility in favor of an elusive, but ever promised, sense of safety. So this is the issue that holistic medicine, of which vibrational medicine is a part, strives to address. How can we connect with our own personal power, how can we as humans come to remember the truth, that the body is naturally very efficient as it's own healer. We have only to live in accordance with the natural laws, those of the physical world as well as the world of spirit, to realize vibrant health and well-being. We can remember our body's brilliance, the miracle of life, and begin to thrive and co-create with Nature, with Gaia, with God. The miracle is within us. This is the difference between modern medicine and holistic health. The miracle is not in the technology, in the doctor's education, or in a bottle of pills. It truly and unequivocally lies within, and is always present, has always been, and always will be. We are never without the miracle. We are the miracle. When we know ourselves, we know how to take care of ourselves. It comes naturally. We don't need any other authority. Besides God, we are the only true authority when it comes to our own health. That is personal responsibility, that is personal power, and that is personal truth.

Vibrational medicine helps us understand who we are. All these modalities inevitably point us in the right direction; within. Through vibrational medicine we begin to ask questions, and eventually we find the right questions to ask. We find release from old painful patterns. We find positive, empowering ways of being in life. We face our demons, and we find out that our only undoing lies with the beliefs we carry that are not in line with our own truth. We find ways to forgive, to clear blocks in our energy systems, to open our chakras, to receive the sweet, steady, constant flow of lifeforce energy that has always been available to us, in every moment. The only ones who deny us this are ourselves. Maybe someone else taught us by example, maybe we have weak genetic inheritance, but these patterns can be addressed right here, right now, and we can heal our whole genetic lineage in an instant. We can do this, and vibrational medicine gives us the keys, and reminds us how to use them.

Vibrational Medicine Modalities

Auric Field, Chakras, Light, and Color

"First of all, I always see the sun! The way I want to identify myself and others is with halos here and there halos, movements of color. And that, I believe, is rhythm."
& mdash;Robert Delaunay

Vibrational medicine modalities operate from the understanding that dis-ease begins with our thoughts, in our etheric body, or auric field. Energy enters into the auric field through the chakras, and is distributed through the meridian channels. These systems are the pathways through which universal life-force energy creates the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual vehicles that spirit inhabits to have this earth-based experience. (Refer to the UMS course Chakras And Auras for a refresher on these concepts.)

Much of the digestible energy received through the chakras comes in the form of light waves. Light energy is the primary nutrient of life on this planet. White light is full spectrum light containing all frequencies needed to manifest life on Earth. As this light enters the earth's energy field, it is "stepped down" into the frequencies of visible light, or color. These colors are the energy frequencies which give life to planet earth and all life-forms upon earth. They are the building-blocks of life, the "vitamins and minerals" for the energy body, and are needed in the appropriate proportions to create a healthy mind, body, and life experience. The chakra system of the human body is the channel through which these frequencies of light are metabolized to form the different human systems, including the physical body, the emotional body, the mental body, and the spiritual body. When the chakras are functioning fluidly, spinning freely and digesting the light frequencies needed to nourish and energize each system, health is maintained at an optimal level. If the chakras are not functioning freely and fluidly, then these frequencies are unable to be used by the human energy system and imbalances occur. Most often, fear and negative thoughts are the cause of inefficient chakra function. Each chakra relates to a level of consciousness, a psychological function, an emotional state, and certain organs, glands, and nerve centers in the body. For optimal health of these systems, the chakra absorbs the appropriate amount of color and light frequency, and feeds the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual levels that need that specific frequency. This is a very delicately balanced, complex, and absolutely miraculous system, and vibrational medicine addresses the needs of the system as a whole.

Color therapy is the modality which specifically addresses the digestion of light frequencies. The basic premise is that color is applied to the chakras and meridians directly, giving a boost of energetic nourishment, so that effortless absorption is facilitated. This directly affects the systems that are nourished by the specific frequency, and balance is restored. With this form of therapy, as with any, the thoughts underlying the imbalance must be addressed as well, but the extra energy provided by the treatment helps to support this shift as well.

Color is applied therapeutically in a variety of ways. In advanced pranic healing (see section on pranic healing) color frequencies are absorbed in through the left hand of the practitioner (through conscious intention and visualization) and flowed out (again, through conscious intention and visualization) through the right hand into the energy field of the receiver. Often the colors are softened and blended with white light in order to be gentler to the system to avoid shock or damage that can occur in a weak system. Somatic healing and Alchemical Hypnotherapy, healing modalities channeled and taught by David Quigley, CHT, founder of The Alchemy Institute, use color through conscious intention and visualization to drain out emotional and mental energy stuck in the body, as well as to nourish and heal the body/mind/spirit.

Other applications of color healing involve the use of colored elixirs, oils, gels, prisms, and various means of projection and focusing, including color/light acupuncture, which uses a penlight to project colors into the chakra and meridian system. Color therapy can also be practiced very effectively as a self-healing modality, through clothing choices, environmental (home and office) color choices, and meditation and visualization on certain colors. These are all effective ways to absorb these light frequencies into the chakras to realize and maintain vibrant health and well-being. The ideal way to maintain the appropriate balance of these frequencies are the ones provided by nature, which include developing the higher mind, opening the heart, focusing on love and joy, and absorbing the colors provided by the sun in just the right full-spectrum light frequency nutrient combinations. So many psychological, emotional, and physical imbalances can be avoided entirely by living a natural life, with lots of time outdoors, in nature, moving, breathing, and interacting with all the natural sustenance energies on the planet. These other methods could be likened to taking a supplement to get the necessary nutrients your body needs, instead of getting it from your food. Try to get your nutrients directly from Source as much as possible, but do use the supplements when you feel you need an extra boost in order to make shifts and realization of well-being possible for you.

Sound Healing

"Rhythm is there in the cycles of the seasons, in the migrations of the birds and animals, in the fruiting and withering of plants, and in the birth, maturation and death of ourselves."
& mdash;Mickey Hart of The Grateful Dead, said to Senate panel studying music therapy.

According to many ancient religious traditions, the universe was created through sound. The word, the sound or voice of God/dess, went out into the void, and began to create. Scientist have called this "The Big Bang," though this once cherished theory can no longer account for new discoveries about the Universe. However, the name tells us something. Indigenous cultures often have mythology teachings that tell of one who sings the universe into being.

Vibration is sound. Everything that is in existence, everything that has life and breath, everything energized by the mysterious force of nature, has a sound, a frequency, a musical, rhythmic quality. The relationship between the planets is called "The music of the spheres." We can consider nature, and any system within nature, to be one great symphony so vast we cannot even conceive, and yet we are playing our part, as each cell in our body, each molecule, each atom, each proton and neutron has its own rhythm, it's own note, it's own frequency.

In Shamanic traditions, apprentices are often encouraged to listen to the sounds around them as if coming from one source, as if all the sounds are orchestrated to create harmony. This is practiced in wild places, forests, deserts and beaches. Nature's symphony is magnificent to tune in to, to awaken to. We know that all Indigenous traditions used sound for healing in one form or another. Whether through drumming, singing, bells, the lyre, flute, didgeridoo, conch, brass bowl, chanting, repeating mantras, toning, keening, throat singing, whatever the chosen instrument, sound is the most faithful, valuable, and consistent form of healing we know. It even surpasses touch as a more universally recognized and utilized method of maintaining health, connectedness, balance, harmony, and well-being. Music truly is a universal language, and it is closely related to another universal language, mathematics. Music brings people together like nothing else (Oh, except that other universal language: food! And they go so well together!)

Sound healing is the practice of applying vibrational frequencies within the audible range to the human energy field, to bring the energetic bodies, chakras, organ systems, cells, and all parts into harmony, supporting optimal health and vitality.

The ear may well be our most important sense organ. Through the medulla, the auditory nerve is connected to every muscle in the body. Strength, flexibility, equilibrium, and muscle tone are all affected by the vibrational information received by the ear. In addition, through the vagus nerve, the inner ear is connected to the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, stomach, larynx, bladder, and intestines. All the systems in our body are informed by vibrations as they enter the ear. On his website, Paul Hubbard describes sound healing: "In the biblical writings of creation, ‘First was the Word (sound vibration), And from the Word All Things were created (sound vibration moving into physical manifestation). ‘All things are created from sound vibration. There is a phrase in the Vedas, an ancient text found in India, which is, ‘Nada Bramin,' meaning ‘The World is Sound.' There is nothing in existence that was not created from and with sound vibration. Sound is the seeded vibration of creation."

Resonance is when two objects vibrate in harmony with each other. When an opera singer shatters a glass with her voice, she has achieved harmonic resonance with the matter and shape of the glass. As she increases the volume of her voice, the forces that holds the glass together gives way, and the glass shatters.

We know that every organ, cell, and bone in the body has its own resonant frequency. Together all these frequencies create a compound frequency, as the instruments in a well-trained orchestra does. When one organ in the body is "out of tune," the whole body is affected. Sound healing addresses this by bringing the organ back into harmony, to restore resonance, and in turn, health. When a harmonious sound is projected at a person, if that person is in a state of disharmony, he or she will eventually shift into a state of harmony through resonance with the sound being introduced. This is called sympathetic vibration.

Sound healing takes many forms. According to Quabalic wisdom, chanting one of the many names of God can activate the tree of life and lead to enlightenment. What are these symbolic of? Do the names of God represent musical tones, and when we find the right tone for our body, we activate the life force within ourselves, aligning us with the Divine, and leading, with repetition, to ascension? Just an idea... The practice of chanting mantras is explored in the UMS class Mantras And Mudras, and Meditation Skills, where the bijas, or seed sounds, are discussed, and related to the names of God. The bijas are combined to form Mudras, which magnetize certain qualities of the Divine. These two practices seem to be related, and I wonder if they achieve the same goal. Undoubtedly, the practice of aligning with Divine energy through sound has been around for a very long time. The East Indian Yogic traditions attribute a different musical note to each one of the chakras, and Traditional Chinese Medicine relates each organ system with one of the five elements, fire, earth, metal, water, and wood. These elements also have a musical note attributed to them, and these five notes make up a pentatonic scale that has long been used by Chinese composers. This system has been used also to create elemental music, with a combination of indicated correspondences that are considered balancing to the chakras and healing to the organ systems.

Hans Jenny, a Swiss scientist in the 1960s, experimented to discover how sound waves affected various materials when placed on metal plates. Materials like mercury, gel, iron fillings, and cornstarch were placed on the plates, and different sound frequencies were generated under them. He found that low frequency tones produced simple geometric shapes. As the frequencies were increased, the materials would break up and begin to form more complex patterns. The sound "OH" produced a well- defined circle, while the sound "OM" produced a pattern very much like the vedic symbol for this sound, the Shri Yantra. Jenny's conclusion was that sound creates form.

In 1974, Fabien Maman, then a jazz singer, noticed the affect certain keys had on the audience and the musicians. He got together with French physicist Joel Sternheimer, and they began to study these affects. They found that every tissue, organ, meridian, and system in the body had its own resonance with a musical note. Maman later worked with Helene Grimal, a scientist with the National Center For Scientific Research in Paris. They studied the affects that sound has on normal as well as malignant cells. What they found was that when cells were exposed to certain notes, it affected their size, shape, color, and vibrancy. They found that when cancer cells were subjected to a chromatic scale, "their intracellular components started to lose definition as the scale ascended, and generally disintegrated between A (440 hertz) and B." Maman theorizes that this research has important implications for the stimulation of health and vitality for normal cells, harmonization for healing or absorption of abnormal cells.

Masaru Emoto found the most amazing proof of how sound affects matter. He introduced certain sounds to water, and then froze it so it formed a crystal. What he found was that when he played classical music to the water, it formed beautiful, complex, well-defined, clear crystals with varying soft colors when frozen. When he played heavy metal music to the water and froze it, it formed a crystal that looked fragmented, with a disorganized, undefined shape, and a rather sickly grey-green color. Healing music, Tibetan mantra, and folk music all produced beautiful, healthy looking crystals as well. Japanese pop music, on the other hand, formed square crystals with less complexity and attractiveness. He also experimented with directing certain attitudes and emotions toward water, like gratitude, thankfulness, anger, sadness, and so on. This also produced definitive patterns in the water crystals. We can be sure that since our bodies contain 70% water, and every cell responds to the vibrations it is exposed to, what we listen to has a huge affect on our quality of life. So how can we use this knowledge to our advantage?

There are a great many modalities using sound for healing. As discussed earlier, sound healing is one of the oldest and most prevalent methods of shifting into balance and health. According to Mayan astrology, each of us comes into birth riding a wave of energy. This wave is part of a cycle, and has correspondences of energy, action, and a specific tone. Each tone is an expression of an energetic quality, and each tone has a complimentary tone as well. When this tone is sounded in one ear, with its complimentary tone sounded in the other ear, the higher brain can be accessed, and health and well-being realized.

Many practitioners using sound healing develop their own methods of using sound as medicine. John Beaulieu, N.D., Ph.D., developed a system he calls "BioSonic repatterning." This process uses tuning forks calibrated to specific frequencies, which are used to "tune" the energy bodies and stimulate resonance, health and vitality. A very interesting aspect of Beaulieu's work is his research into "nitric oxide," a substance which is released from the cells of the body when health, well-being, and vitality are being experienced. There is a rhythmic movement to the releasing of this substance, called "puffing." The cells puff up and release the nitric oxide with a measurable pattern and rhythm. When this rhythm is disrupted, the cells do not express in a whole, plump, healthy way, and lethargy, confusion, depression, and ill-health is experienced. BioSonic repatterning is a way of stimulating the rhythmic release of nitric oxide, through the use of sound and plant energy (a specific blend of herbs is used, called "EnRhythm"). Beaulieu has developed many tools for use in sound healing, and these products, as well as a lot of great information on nitric oxide and sound healing, can be found at his website.

Let us not forget about Royal Rife and his Rife machine that was discussed in the UMS course Metaphysical Technologies. He invented a machine that generates whatever frequency you desire, and has mapped out, with the help of many scientists after him who continued his work, which frequencies kill which viruses. He even had a nearly 100% cure rate for cancer patients with his invention. Unfortunately it was blocked by the American Medical Association, but it goes to show that sound can truly heal. It not only heals, but can destroy unwanted organisms, viruses and bacteria.

One of the biggest proponents of sound healing today is Jonathan Goldman. He is the author of Healing Sounds: The Power Of Harmonics (2002) and the director of the Sound Healers Association. Below is an excerpt from an article entitled "The Sound Of Healing: An Interview With Jonathan Goldman, which came out in the March/April 2003 Nexus, Colorado's Holistic Journal. The interviewer was Ravi Dykeman.

RD: Please describe sound healing.

JG: First, let me point out that modern science is now in agreement with what the ancient mystics have told us & mdash;that everything is in a state of vibration, from the electrons moving around the nucleus of an atom, to planets and distant galaxies moving around stars. As they're creating movement, they are creating vibration, and this vibration can be perceived as sound. So everything is creating a sound, including the sofa that we're sitting on, or this table, or our bodies. Every organ, every bone, every tissue, every system of the body is creating a sound. When we are in a state of health, we're like an extraordinary orchestra that's playing a wonderful symphony of the self. But what happens if the second violin player loses the sheet music? He or she begins to play out of tune, and pretty soon the entire string section sounds bad. Pretty soon, in fact, the entire orchestra is off. This is a metaphor for disease.

I have the greatest respect for traditional allopathic medicine. But with regard to our string player who's playing the wrong music, allopathic medicine currently has the approach of either giving this player enough drugs so he or she simply passes out, or cutting the head off with a broad sword & mdash;analogous to surgery. I ask the question, "What if we could somehow give the string player back the sheet music?" What if we could somehow project the correct resonant frequency to that part of the body that is vibrating out of harmony, and cause it to vibrate back into its normal, healthy rhythm, restoring it to a condition of health? That's the basic principle of using sound as a healing modality.

Essential Oils/Aromatherapy

"Pleasure is the flower that passes; remembrance, the lasting perfume."
& mdash;Jean de Boufflers

Aromatherapy has also been around for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians were known for their lavish use of scented essential oils. They were very spiritual in all realms of culture, and to them, scent was sacred. Certain aromas were associated with different Gods and Goddesses, and within their mystery school teachings, the esoteric knowledge concerning the true nature of aroma was taught. They believed that Ra, one of their most important deities, created smells, and that all scents came from him. They practiced the knowledge of using aromatherapy to summon spirit, and they believed the dead traveled through the plant essence, the scent. The sacred art of creating perfumes was taught in the temples, and it was believed that certain scents could enhance one's energy and power. The magic of plants had to do not with the chemistry itself, but with the spirit of the plant, and these energies could be embodied by special and mysterious alchemical extraction processes. They used a combination of 7 sacred oils in the mummification process, which enabled the spirit to travel, with cedar oil being the most important of these scents. Perfume oils were used to induce trance, aid in relaxation and promote deep sleep, intensify dreams, and bring about more positive mental and emotional states.

Other cultures throughout history have used aromatherapy as well. The ancient Chinese used herbs extensively, and aromatherapy was a part of this practice. They shared the Egyptian practice of using specific aromas, of fresh, extracted, or burning herbs, to connect with the ancestor spirits, as do the Native American people to this day.

Aromas have a unique effect on the human brain. They have the power to evoke very specific memories, to "transcend time," and transport us to a place of significance to us, from when we smelled this scent in the past. Scents seem to exist "between the worlds," beyond the boundaries of time and space. Native American healers were, and are, very masterful in their understanding of the importance of essences and vibrational medicine. They use many sacred herbs daily, and this practice includes the burning of sacred herbs such as sage, sweet grass, osha root, cedar, copal resin, and others. These smells are believed to "wake up" the ancestors, and attract them to come and assist and teach the people. The Native American wisdom people understood smell to be a subtle form of energy that exists both here and in the spirit world. The spirits are able to smell, or sense, the aroma, and follow it to this side. The magic of working with these practices involves much knowledge of the energies of the plants, such as that sage clears negative energies, sweetgrass brings positive, sweet energies, and cedar honors the ancestors and brings them calling.

Aromas, emotions, and memories all seem to have a special connection. I have a very powerful association that has been with me since early childhood. When I was about 6 years old, I lived in a house with a big open field next to me, with oaks and other natural life, including lizards, birds, and butterflies. This was a place were my brothers and I frequently explored and played games in. It was our little piece of nature to connect with. That year, in the spring and summer, the land was cleared and developed into an apartment complex. This was accomplished in a short time period, and by mid-summer, the workers were paving the parking lot. We continued to play in this area during the development process, curiously watching the transformation through children's non-judgmental, wondering eyes. That was the summer of the caterpillars. There were caterpillars everywhere, hundreds and hundreds of them. Now I understand that all the butterfly eggs were hatching, and the places where the larvae normally fed and grew were gone. Then, all I knew was there was an amazing world of caterpillars to explore. We collected them and played with them for a few weeks, but eventually they all began to die from lack of food. Soon there were hundreds of dead caterpillars everywhere, with their phosphorescent yellow green body fluid running on the ground. This was about the time the blacktop was being poured. I thought, then and for years after, that the strong, pungent odor I was smelling was the smell of caterpillar blood. To this day, when I smell fresh blacktop, I think of my friends the caterpillars, as well as that carefree summer of my youth. It is a very powerful association, and it takes me right back to my 6 year old self, to that time and place. Aromas are powerful and subtle forms of energy that can tap into our subconscious, and aromatherapy can be a wonderful tool for healing. Do you associate certain smells with particular people, memories or places? If so, what are your associations?

Aromatherapy has wide applications in healing, either by itself or in combination with other types of therapy. It is a very complimentary modality and goes well with most other practices. The only instances in which aromatherapy may not be appropriate are when flower essences or homeopathy are being used (this is up to the discretion of the healer, and there are differing viewpoints on this subject), or if the client is very sensitive or reactive to smells. Often with aromatherapy, less is more, and very light use of essential oils can provide a more energetic treatment which can effectively align the subtle vibrations of plant and person.

Aromatherapy is also one of the most common forms of healing that people use on their own in their homes. Some of the most popular uses are essential oils in a bath for relaxation or rejuvenation (there are some great products made just for this purpose), the use of potpourri blends, and the burning of scented candles and incense. Though there is a big market that produces a great variety of these types of products, it is very important to buy all natural products which do not contain artificial scents or other harmful ingredients. Products such as those "plug-in" things, where a little dispenser gives off the smell of spring as it is warmed up, are made of manmade chemicals that, far from being healthful, can actually be quite toxic and cause side affects like headache, nausea, and breathing difficulties. This is an extreme example, and most people are somewhat aware that these types of "aromatherapy" products are not good for them. There are even some incenses, potpourris, and scented oils that may seem okay, but are not made with natural, pure plant oils. The best products will most likely be found in metaphysical book stores and health food stores or food co-ops, as well as through many wonderful online sources. They will also most likely be costly, as the extraction of pure plant essences is a very intensive process in which thousands of flowers or other plant parts are used to create a small bottle of pure oil. These oils are very special, and are the earth's gift to us, to be used sparingly while honoring the source. When approached in this way, you will know this is money well spent!

Aromatherapy is one of the most common complimentary vibrational healing techniques used by a wide range of healers. Many massage therapists use different scented lotions and oils for relaxing or rejuvenation during massage. Many energy healers as well use aromatherapy to enhance their preferred healing modalities. Many counselors and therapists also use aromatherapy to relax clients and increase comfort level. Many healers have adopted the Native American wisdom practice of burning sage to cleanse a client's aura, or to clear their own energy or the energy within their space between healings, which is very effective. There are also "vibrational sprays," generally containing pure water and essential oils, which are used for this purpose as well. Just remember if you choose to use essential oils and other aromatherapy products, especially in vibrational healing practices, that you research your source as well as you can, and insure you are using only pure (organic, whenever possible) oils and products made with pure oils and other high quality natural ingredients.

Pranic Healing

Prana is the Sanskrit word for "vital life force," the same as Ch'i in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Pranic Healing uses prana, the subtle life energy that is available from the earth, air and sun, to bring about healing. The pranic practitioner cultivates an awareness of this subtle energy, and learns how to direct it where needed.

A very important aspect of pranic healing is the basic belief that the body is a powerful, natural homeostatic entity that is able to repair itself quickly given the optimal conditions. Pranic healing is taught as a self-care technique as well as a practitioner-client exchange. When pranic healing is given, the person giving it is able to focus their own conscious intention toward receiving prana from one or more of the three sources mentioned, and instead of absorbing it, channels it to the receiver. This enables the receiver to use the extra energy to heal more quickly. The energy enters the auric field of the receiver, and the energetic body uses the prana to create health in the physical body.

The use of prana, or vital life force by whatever name you call it, has been practiced by healers since prehistoric times. All cultures have some form of this type of healing practice. This particular practice started in India long ago, and today, pranic healing has been developed into an artform by certain healers, the most well known being GrandMaster Choa Kok Sui. GM Choa Kok Sui (I am choosing to use the "GM" before his name as a sign of respect, as this is appropriate to his culture, and because I think he has well earned it) has developed a system of pranic healing that, while based on very ancient and traditional practices, has been evolved and expanded to fit the needs of humanity today. Much of the rest of the information in this section will be based on GM Choa Kok Sui's teachings, sourced directly from his teachings or through his students, as well as some personal experience of this writer.

In pranic healing, illness in the physical body has two origins: either too much or too little prana flowing through corresponding parts of the energetic system. Too much prana causes congestion, and too little causes weakness. This idea will be familiar from the acupuncture section, and is a foundational principle in Oriental Medicine. prana collects and causes congestion in areas where there are emotional or mental "blocks," or other unresolved traumas to the energy body. Congestion in certain areas often causes a lack of flow to other areas, causing weakness, and "lack of vitality." Either condition can manifest as disease in the physical body.

A pranic healing session generally begins with scanning the energetic body to detect areas of depletion or congestion of prana. These conditions can be detected through sensitization of the healer's energy field around the hands. The hands are passed along the contours of the body at a 1 to 3 inch distance, and the healer notes certain sensations that indicate one of the two conditions. These may be warmth for congestion or a cold, empty feeling for weakness. At sources of congestion, the healer may have to move his/her hands further out from the body to feel the edge of the field. Some people have their own unique way of interpreting and experiencing this energetic information. In general, a healthy etheric body should follow the contours of the physical body. Where variations are found, there may be an uneven distribution of prana. It is important to receive training and guidance, or practice on your own, to determine the difference between congestion and depletion. In the case of very experienced pranic healers, especially those with advanced abilities in "seeing" the etheric body, this step may not be neccesary, but it is very helpful in sensitizing to energy and getting more adjusted to the workings of the subtle bodies.

After determining areas of congestion and weakness (almost always there is both), the treatment continues with clearing of the congested area(s). This is done by "sweeping" the field with the hands, and flicking the stagnant energy off the hands after each sweeping pass. The energy being removed should be flicked into some sort of receptacle. GM Sui recommends a bowl of salt water. This can later be purified and returned to the earth, or poured down the drain. However you are disposing of it, purify it first. This can be done with conscious intention (think it pure, and it will be!), by infusing it with white light pranic energy, or by placing a magnet or charged crystal in the water (if using a crystal, be sure and cleanse it afterwards). Other methods for storing this energy for disposal (I like to think of it as "neutralization") are using a nice, large, heavy, earthy rock, and placing your hands on the rock after each pass, then allowing the energy to drain into the rock (later placing the rock on the earth to drain and recharge), or, my ideal favorite, working outside, and sending the energy directly down into the earth, asking Gaia to take it and neutralize for the good of all beings.

On a side note, both water and rock store prana. Think about swimming in a deep river pool and getting out and soaking up the sun on a nice big, sun warmed rock. Notice how good you feel, how vibrant and alive afterwards. This is one of the best ways to get a fantastic, all natural pranic healing! Also, you can use rocks and crystals charged with prana in healing sessions, or as great self-healing tools. Oh, and be sure and charge your bath, or your children's bath, with prana as well!

After clearing congested prana, the fun really begins. The practitioner now starts to charge the energy field of the receiver by intentionally taking in prana and channeling it into his/her field. The left hand is receptive, and the right hand active, so the left hand is out, palm up, to receive the prana, and the right hand is positioned close to, but not touching, the receiver's body. The prana is then channeled into the field for an amount of time, depending on condition. Several areas can be charged, or the whole field can be charged at once, with the energy going where it needs to go.

Another important aspect of GM Sui's teachings has to do with right-living. The importance of good nutrition, including raw fruits and vegetables (high in prana), and avoidance of flesh foods (having dirty, gray, stagnant energy); The importance of proper breathing, including daily deep breathing into the abdomen, as well as breathing plenty of fresh air; the importance of vigorous movement, especially outdoors, which moves prana and prevents congestion from occurring, as well as increasing intake of air prana; The importance of clean living, avoiding toxic substances and addictions, and also avoiding negative people and other negative influences; The importance of thinking positive thoughts, and avoiding victim mentality and negative self-talk; The importance of finding forgiveness and embracing loving kindness in all relationships; The importance of right-livelihood, and doing what your inner calling is telling you to do; And the importance of meditation and stilling the mind to connect with higher spiritual energies. A very beautiful and powerful practice taught by GM Sui is the Meditation on the Twin Hearts, filling self with divine prana, and charging planet earth with these energies.

These are the basics of pranic healing. There are many exercises one can use to become more aware of prana in the environment, and to use it effectively. There are also excellent teachings on using different colors of prana for different conditions, as well as to stabilize healings. Pranic healing is one of the easiest and most consistently effective methods of vibrational medicine, and has very wide applications. Many practitioners will visit hospitals and homes, and can do distance healings as well. It is a great complimentary therapy, and in many places in the world it is used in conjunction with other modalities, though it stands alone very well. It can be applied with great success to pets, as well as houseplants and gardens.

Master Choa Kok Sui's motto is, "If I can learn to heal, you can also learn to heal." If you are interested in learning more, I highly recommend his books, including Pranic Healing (1989), Advanced Pranic Healing: A Practical Manual On Color Pranic Healing (2001) and many others.

Living Foods

by Tristan Anderson

"Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food."
& mdash;Hippocrates

All matter is a condensation of energy, as the great physicist Albert Einstein has shown us. Food matter is a beautiful example of how energy can condense and organize into a living structure. The energetic pattern of food is composed of elements from the earth, sun, air, water and ether. These elements come together in a unique way that gives food its particular vibrational state. The wisdom inherent in the cosmos fashioned food into energetic matrixes that sustain all forms of life.

Human experimentation with different foods throughout time has shown that certain foods can have profound healing effects. The vibrational energies in food can be consumed into our being and transform us. We literally are what we eat, if we think of eating as the process of taking in materials from the universe, such as through eating, breathing, drinking, and sun bathing. When we speak of vibrational healing with living food, what is implied is that we are being healed by the energy of food that retains its original vibrational makeup. Foods that have this original makeup are those like freshly picked fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and herbs. If eaten in their living state (uncooked), these foods transmit a powerful vibrational force that interacts with our own vibrational field. In this way living foods have the potential to enliven our being and help restructure it in a way that is more in vibrational harmony.

Diseases from the large to the small have been cured through consuming living food. Even so called "incurable diseases" have been fully reversed from the power of the vibrational force in living foods. Many other healing modalities have been proven to cure "incurable diseases" as well. Therefore, I invite us all to give up the notion of "incurable diseases."

There are many modern scientists and spiritualists who are working to deeply understand how this living vibrational force is actually healing us. Many living food advocates share the theory that the enzymes in living food, which are often equated with its life-force or vibrational energy, literally give more life force to each cell. This allows the cells to perform their functions easier. Often cells can't even perform all their normal functions, such as the process of detoxification, because their energy has been depleted by unhealthy life-style habits. Also, energy is often being overly expended toward other functions such as digestion. Living food advocates claim that the enzymes in living food not only help with digestion, but release their potent energy into the cells to reenergize them. This gives the body more vibrational energy to work with and allows it to perform any healing that needs to take place.

This is the physical aspect of vibrational healing with living foods. There is another profound domain that living food works on too, which is the spiritual. Many living food practitioners such as Gabriel Cousens M.D. have shared that the vibrational force in live foods enhances and clears the energetic pathways of the body. In particular Dr. Cousens found that his kundalini was greatly assisted in awakening through eating living food. He says in his book Spiritual Nutrition (2005) that the light (vibration) in living foods resonates with the inner (spiritual) light and helps it to open and expand into all levels of being. Although he says you can't eat your way to the Divine, he says that living food can certainly be a helpful tool.

Vibrational healing with living food is an exciting and cutting edge practice. Research all over the world is presently being conducted to deepen our knowledge of living foods' healing powers. One of the most intriguing aspects of living foods to me is that while there is obviously a very mystical side to it with people's experiences of its ability to transfer healing vibrations and assist in spiritual awakening, there is also a very grounded, practical and natural aspect to it, which is simply eating food as it has been presented to us by the earth. Eating an apple from a tree is simple and instinctual and yet within each bite of a living apple resides healing vibrations of the universe. Within each apple are not just vitamins and minerals, but vibrations of the earth, the sun, water, air, ether and of a mysterious light that is within all things.

Flower Essences

"Bread feeds the body, indeed, but flowers feed also the soul."
& mdash;The Koran

Flower essences are believed by many to have been discovered by Dr. Edward Bach, a bacteriologist who practiced in the early 1900's. Others believe that Bach rediscovered an ancient healing art practiced since prehistory. Modern-day flower essence knowledge is definitely attributable to Dr. Bach, who spent many years experimenting on himself and others, developing a practice treating patients exclusively with this unique method.

Flower essences are liquid tinctures made from flowers, with the essences being extracted most often by placing the flowers in a glass bowl filled with spring water, which is then left in the sun for several hours. The Bach method involves picking the flowers in the early morning, when the dew is still on the petals, and placing them in the bowl of water as soon as the collecting is completed. This ensures the flower will have full potency, with the energy of the plant moving into the flower to receive the sun's welcome rays. This process uses the energy of the sun to imprint upon the water the vibrational essence of the flower. Occasionally, with some flowers, an alternate method of boiling the plant in spring water is used to make the vibrational impression on the water. The water now contains the energetic structure of the plant, and can transmit this essence.

After this process is complete, the liquid is combined with equal parts brandy, creating what is referred to as the "Mother Tincture." Two drops of the mother tincture are added to a 30 ml bottle and the bottle is then filled with spring water, and these are the bottles that are available from Bach Flower Remedies. There are many new types of flower essence creations becoming available to us as well. Many people believe that the Bach Remedies are superior, and they are very consistent. The people involved are endeavoring to maintain the simplicity and integrity that was Bach's trademark. Yet there are some really wonderful and conscious people out there doing their own work with this gentle, natural therapy, and many of these seem to have a very high level of integrity as well. There are a few differences in the methods of prescribing the essences though, and we will discuss those in a moment.

A major factor in the philosophy of flower essence healing is the idea that mental and emotional imbalances are often the root cause of illness and dis-ease. Another is that, with the focus on positive aspects and strengths, the body can achieve balance and harmony, including vibrant health. With flower essence therapy, as in homeopathy, the emotions and temperament of the person or animal being treated determine the remedy. The symptom is not focused on, unless it is emotional or psychological. The vibrational essences and life force energies of the flowers work directly with the emotional and mental body, instantly, or often gradually, changing the vibrational patterns found in these energy fields, depending on the length of time the non-resonant thought pattern or emotion has been around, and how deeply ingrained the pattern is. This process is very safe and gentle, with absolutely no side-affects, other than the possibility of buried emotions coming to the surface to be treated as well. Often in this case, the remedies will change, as one layer of emotion gives way to reveal a deeper layer.

Bach used a method of determining remedies for his patients by holding interviews in which he encouraged them to share how they were feeling, and observed their general outlook, temperament, and nature. Through this careful and thorough process, he would determine which remedy was appropriate. He was very forthcoming with his patients, and he shared this process with them. An important part of his philosophy was self-empowerment, as he wanted people to understand the treatment and to be able to help determine for themselves which remedies were the right ones for them.

Today, other methods are becoming popular for choosing remedies, such the use of intuition, muscle testing, and pendulum use. These methods are very effective, but are not recommended by Bach. The reason is that when a healer uses these methods, this may seem quite mysterious to the client, and they may have the idea that they are unable to prescribe remedies for themselves if they do not know how to use these methods. Also, the client's process of getting in touch with his/her emotions through the sharing brings the feelings to the surface, and brings more conscious awareness to the treatment. This insures that the client is ready for the treatment, and is aware of what is happening and what they can expect. This is also a part of the self-empowerment process Bach believed was essential to the healing of the whole person. Of course, if during treatment, an interview is used along with other methods, this can be effective as well. Still, traditional Bach teachings are to keep it simple, as this is believed to produce the most accurate results.

Findhorn Flower Essences

The Findhorn community in Scotland has been intentionally co-creating with nature since the early sixties, when a small group of people began a journey which would lead to a major revolution for many in the way we think about and connect with the natural world, especially with plants. This intentional community has become a nonprofit foundation which teaches all over the world about listening to the spirit within, co-creating with nature, and living in harmony with Gaia.

Marion Leigh is a member of the community, and a homeopathic doctor who created Findhorn Flower Essences. Many of the flowers used in the essences are grown at Findhorn, and the water used to receive the energetic imprints of the flowers is sourced from sacred wells in the area. Leigh uses the Bach method of sun-infusion to create her Findhorn remedies. The following is a quote from the Findhorn Flower Essence website, giving a great description of FFEs philosophy on flower essences:

"The subtle healing properties of flower essences restore equilibrium on all levels of being: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. They can enhance personal development and are a powerful aid to transformation. They offer us the opportunity to address outworn behaviour patterns and negative states of mind which may contribute to or cause disease, emotional imbalance and spiritual disharmony. By stimulating the body's inherent ability to heal itself, flower essences restore order from a higher level and help to strengthen desirable or positive qualities such as courage, inner peace, love or acceptance.

"These essences have been created in cooperation with the forces of Nature. The elements of earth, air, fire, and water combine to create the physical form of every plant according to the divine blueprint. Our love and thanks must go to the Angels & mdash;the divine architects & mdash;and to the nature spirits, who work according to the plan to bring each plant into being. Vis Medicatrix Naturae, the healing power of Nature, is their gift to us in the form of flower essences. Through the love with which the essences are prepared, and the intention that those taking them maintain, these natural essences reaffirm our connection with the divine and the oneness of all life."

Findhorn Flower Essences also has their own collection of flower essences, using the local flowers from the Scottish highlands where the sanctuary is located. They include some of the same flowers as Bach F.Rs., and others as well. They also offer many blended remedies, specific to certain desires or intentions for emotional, mental, and spiritual growth and integration. These types of blended remedies are becoming very popular with healers and light workers. I am including some of Findhorn's offerings of these remedy blends with brief descriptions (unlike Bach's description, these are stated in the positive, describing not the symptom but the desired outcome), to give an example of this quickly evolving area of flower essence healing.

Homeopathy

"Homeopathy...cures a larger percentage of cases than any other method of treatment and is beyond doubt safer and more economical and a most complete medical science."
& mdash;Mahatama Gandhi

"There have been two great revelations in my life: The first was bepop, the second was homeopathy."
& mdash;Dizzy Gillespie

Homeopathy is a healing system developed in the early 1800s, by Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician who coined the term, which means "similar suffering." Indigenous healers and shamans practiced this method of healing as well, so we know this natural wisdom practice is quite ancient, though Hahnemann did develop the modern form practiced today. It works on the principle that substances which cause certain symptoms when ingested physically can energetically treat illnesses with the same symptoms. For a remedy to work, it must fit the entire symptom profile. For example, onions cause the eyes to water and burn, and the nose to run. These very specific symptoms can be effectively treated by a homeopathic remedy made from onions. The remedies work on an energetic rather than physical level, by stimulating and strengthening the energetic bodies, in turn strengthening and healing the physical body. The motto of homeopathy is "like cures like," and this very effective modality of vibrational medicine was one of the most widely used healing methods in this country for about 100 years, until allopathic medicine gained popularity in the early 1900s.

Homeopathic medicine addresses the whole person, and a homeopathic physician will often conduct a very thorough interview with a client before prescribing a remedy. Depending on the nature of the dis-ease, a remedy may address immediate or chronic symptoms. A constitutional remedy can be prescribed to strengthen and support the whole system of an individual, and emotional, mental, and physical symptoms can be addressed together. The practitioner develops a "picture" of the individual's life expression, health, and vitality, and addresses these with the remedies prescribed.

Remedies are developed through a system called "potentization," a dilution process facilitated through the forceful shaking or striking of a liquid extraction of the material, which captures the energy or frequency of the specific natural substance. Homeopaths consider that the more times the substance is diluted through potentization, the stronger the dose becomes. Through the potentization process, the pure vibrational frequency of the substance is accessed, and this works more directly on the energetic bodies, where dis-ease starts.

Because of the complexity of homeopathic treatment, with the exact matching of emotional, mental, and physical symptoms, it is somewhat more difficult to self-heal with homeopathics, though immediate symptoms can be addressed with over the counter homeopathic remedies which are known to treat common ailments. These will work especially well with childhood complaints, such as teething, earache, colic, and other simplistic symptom profiles. Children aren't as bound up with the complex mental and emotional profiles as adults, and respond quite well to simple treatments. Adults tend to respond better when a constitutional remedy is given to address the complexity of their individual "picture."

There are many good books on homeopathics for people who are interested in learning more and using this alternative to allopathic medicine for addressing the health of themselves and their families, including pets. Homeopathy has virtually no side-effects because a misdiagnosed remedy will have no affect on the system. When the right remedy is found, immediate shifts can occur. Constitutional remedies, when taken consistently, can support the energetic system to become balanced and whole, healthy and fluid, which will show up shortly in improved physical health and well-being. Homeopathic medicine has been well researched, and much documentation on its effectiveness is available. As a healing modality, it is very popular in Europe, as it has been since its modern inception. In fact, the royal family in England uses a homeopath as their primary physician!

Acupuncture

In A Practical Guide To Vibrational Medicine (2001) by Richard Gerber MD, the author tells us of documentation found by medical historians proving the existence of traditional acupuncture treatments in China dating back 5000 years. It has only been since the 1970s that acupuncture began to gain acceptance in the West. Today many people seek out acupuncture treatments as an alternative, complimentary form of treatment. This is primarily because of the effectiveness of this treatment, gaining popularity through word-of-mouth, not because it is embraced by Western medicine, for this therapy remains a mystery to many American doctors.

Acupuncture, though not necessarily thought of as vibrational medicine, is one of the oldest vibrational therapies still in use and quite popular today. Based on the ancient Chinese medicine model, acupuncture is a process of stimulation of points on the body, called acupuncture points, or acupoints, in order to change the flow of Ch'i, or life force energy to a specific area. These specific points are located along meridian channels, which are energetic channels located along the contours of the body, the points relating to organs, muscles, and other body systems. The points are stimulated with very thin needles, traditionally made from bone or rock, and now most commonly made of stainless steel.

Thousands of years ago, Chinese healers mapped out these meridian lines, and discovered that if there was a disruption in the flow of energy, specific points of blockage would affect specific organs. They learned that by stimulating these points, they could regulate the flow of energy, to bring about a more natural and balanced flow, to ensure optimal function of the organs and body systems. They found that if too little energy was flowing to an organ or other system, this part would become weak, and if too much energy was flowing into an organ or other system, congestion would occur, and cause a block in the flow. Both conditions could cause weakness and disease, and treatment with acupuncture at these indicated points was found to relieve the condition and restore health.

Despite the effectiveness of acupuncture as a treatment for pain relief as well as many diseases, western medicine proponents have been quite slow in recognizing and utilizing this simple, painless practice. Much research has been conducted in the U.S. to determine what is actually happening, and why acupuncture works. Some of the theories include: acupuncture is just a placebo effect, people believe it is going to work, and it does; acupuncture acts to stimulate nerves which effect flow of pain signals to the brain; or stimulation of acupuncture points releases endorphins, which in turn gives pain relief. Traditional Chinese Medicine's view of the body as a dynamic energy system in which the balance of the five elements affects the flow of ch'i through the body, in turn affecting health, was not an acceptable premise to the doctors and scientists still working from the perspective of the body as a purely mechanistic system.

In A Practical Guide to Vibrational Medicine (2001), Dr. Gerber tells about how Russian scientists made an interesting discovery as they were also studying acupuncture. They found that "acupoints had unique electrical characteristics that distinguished them from surrounding skin. They found a ten to twenty-fold drop in electrical skin resistance over acupoints that could easily be measured using conventional electrical recording equipment." Other amazing research has been done in this area, such as the 1960s Korean study by Dr. Kim Bong Han involving injecting dye into the acupoints of rabbits, showing the dye following the same pathways as the ancient veterinary charts of rabbit meridians. Another study by French Drs. Claude Darras and Pierre De Vernejoul involved injecting a radioactive isotope into the acupoints of human patients, as well as into other established channels such as non-acupoints, blood vessels, and the lymph system. They found "when the non-acupoints, blood vessels, or lymphatic channels were injected, the radioactive tracer tended to diffuse outward from the injection site into a typical small circular pattern. However, when true acupoints were injected, the radioactive technetium followed the exact pathways as the acupuncture meridians described and illustrated in several hundred-year-old acupuncture charts of the human body! Even more amazing was the fact that when acupuncture needles were inserted into distant acupoints along the same tracer labeled meridians and then twirled, a change was produced in the rate of flow of technetium through the meridians. In other words, needle stimulation of acupoints on the meridians changed the flow rate of ‘something' including the technetium tracer along the meridian channels. This research provided the first believable evidence supporting the ancient Chinese claim that acupuncture needle stimulation affected the flow of Ch'i through the body's meridians."

Though acupuncture is definitely a physical practice, treating the body directly, it is also considered to be a method of vibrational healing as it works with the subtle energy systems of the body, and the flow and balance of life-force energy in and around the body. It has been found to be very effective in the areas of pain relief, immune system support, aiding in weight loss and smoking cessation, treating allergies and asthma, digestion difficulties, arthritis, and many other maladies, including some ground-breaking work with cancer and AIDS. There are many very knowledgeable acupuncture practitioners, and many of them have studied even longer than the average doctor of Western medicine. Yet these studies are based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, which has never lost the view of humans as dynamic, holistic entities, and has always attempted to address health from a vibrational perspective.

Vibrational Healthcare

"Love's mysteries in souls do grow, but yet the body is his book."
& mdash;John Donne, Extasy

Remember that vision of the future of healthcare? Well, the future really is now. The number and variety of vibrational medicine modalities are too numerous to try to cover in this course, but his gives you a picture of where healthcare is heading, as allopathic medicine sees its demise as a means of realizing health and wellness. Some of the other fascinating modalities of vibrational healing are magnetics (you know, magnets in your shoes, magnetic jewelry...check it out, it is for real!) reiki (see UMS course), crystal and gem healing, cranio-sacral therapy, polarity therapy, Rife machines and other frequency therapies (see UMS elective on Metaphysical Technologies), chakra healing, Intuitive Energy Medicine, sungazing, pranayama, yoga, affirmation, chanting, toning, tai chi, prayer, distance healing, any form of hands on healing, Hands of Light techniques (Barbara Brennan's teachings) and many other forms of vibrational healthcare.

We as a species are beginning to remember our source, and are reconnecting with our inherent wellness, balance, resonance, and vitality. We are discovering our own uniqueness, our own energetic signature, our own vibrational frequency, and we are manifesting our planetary remembrance of how to realize perfect, radiant health, so that we can be connect in love with one another, so that our love and light can shine from our eyes and dance in our hearts, so that we can know ourselves as one again.

"Even heaven and earth cannot exist without the innate knowledge that is inherent in man. For at bottom, heaven, earth, the myriad things, and man form one body. The point at which this unity manifests in its most refined and excellent form is the clear intelligence of the human mind. Wind, rain, dew, thunder, sun and moon, stars, animals and plants, mountains and rivers, earth and stones are essentially of one body with man. It is for this reason that such things as the grains and animals can nourish man and that such things as medicine and minerals can heal diseases. Since they share the same material force, they enter into one another. We are the ones we've been waiting for."
& mdash;Hopi Elders
